OKLAHOMA GAMES ON 1560 KGOW AGAIN!

Since 1968, the OU Club of Houston has sponsored live radio broadcasts of Sooner football games over some of the various local stations.

For local Sooner fans like me, we look forward to 1560 KGOW once again carrying the Oklahoma football games this season from The Sooner Sports Radio Network with Bob Barry Sr., Toby Rowland, and Merv Johnson covering the games.

Just like last season,"The Sooner Tailgate Show" begins 90 minutes prior to kickoff for all football games. The show includes a 60-minute call-in segment with Rowland and Johnson airing live from Sooner Fan Fest for home games and from the press box at road games. "The Sooner Pre-Game Show" airs 30-minutes prior to kickoff from the press box with Barry and Johnson. The show includes a conversation with head coach Bob Stoops.

Immediately following the game, "The Sooner Post-Game Show" with Barry and Johnson includes live interviews with Stoops and OU players. Following the Post-Game Show, the 60-minute "Sooner Wrap-Up" show with Johnson and OU assistant coaches broadcasts live from O'Connell's in Norman after home games only.

Each Tuesday throughout the season, "Sooner Sports Talk" gives fans a chance to talk to Coach Stoops. The broadcast airs live from 7:05-8 p.m. CT from the Red Lobster in Norman.

Each Thursday throughout the season, "Sooner Coaches' Corner" will feature OU assistant coaches on a call-in show. The broadcast airs live from 7:05-8 p.m. CT from O'Connell's.

The broadcasts of the games and coaches’ shows would not be possible without the help of local Sooner followers, including individual and corporate sponsors who have made these local broadcasts possible. The OU Club of Houston continues to ask for your loyal support.

For more information, Sooner fans can check out the OU Club website at www.ouclubofhouston.com.

The OU Club of Houston official football watch party headquarters is at Champps Americana, located in the Uptown Park Shopping Center, 1121 Uptown Park Blvd., (northwest corner of Post Oak Blvd. and the 610 Loop).

The Sooners opening game is at home this Saturday at 6 PM vs. Utah State. GO SOONERS!

REVEREND SHARPTON: WHY ARE YOU SO QUIET?

You may remember in February 2008 when the Rev. Al Sharpton made big news when he claimed on his nationally syndicated radio show that the federal government was eager to prosecute Barry Bonds because he is black, yet was giving Roger Clemens a possible free pass because he is white.

From the transcript of that show in regard to Bonds and Clemens, Big Al said, "When you are black, you are subjected to a different reality, and we are not going to be quiet."

Yet, Al has been pretty quiet recently on his claim that “The Rocket” has been given a free pass because he's a white guy. When Clemens was indicted by the federal government recently for perjury, Sharpton appeared on MSNBC. But his reckless allegations about Bonds and Clemens were not mentioned. Sharpton was on the show to scream "racism!" on another subject.

How come Al is never held accountable for his racial-bias claims regarding sports, but those claims definitely make big news on the sports pages when he first makes them. That's what happens when the media can't distinguish between an activist and a troublemaker.

I have some animosity towards Roger Clemens, but I don’t expect him to be convicted of everything he’s been charged of and I don’t expect him to serve decades in a Federal prison, as newspaper and TV reports say he could. That would be a joke.

I expected Clemens to be indicted; that was a no-brainer. I also expected the Reverend to be silent on the matter after Clemens’ indictment. That also was a no-brainer. Once again, the Reverend Al is a big hypocrite.

It was last year that Sharpton went on one of his oratories to declare that the reason the US government was so persistent in its pursuit of prosecuting Barry Bonds was that Bonds is black while Clemens was being given a pass because he is white. Well, Big Al, now the two ex-ballplayers find themselves treated the same in the eyes of the law; both stand accused of lying under oath with regard to their use of steroids/performance enhancing drugs while they played baseball.

I’m still waiting for Al to make some sort of statement praising the fact that in 2010 racial equality has been achieved in our society. Athletes alleged to have lied under oath are indicted without regard to the color of their skin. Instead, we have the sounds of silence from Reverend Al, the so-called voice of the people.

FLUB OF THE DAY!

On the Wednesday night show on SR 610 with Barry Warner and Shaun Bijani, Barry in an interview with CBS Sports Football Studio Analyst, Spencer Tillman, while discussing college football, said there are 119 Division 1A teams. Memo to Barry: There are 120 teams and there have been 120 for the last three seasons. Do your homework Barry!

A little bit later, when the guys were discussing the number of season tickets that the Houston Texans have sold this year, Shaun did not know the capacity of Reliant Stadium for football (71,500) and said it wasn't important that he didn't know it. But if he knew the capacity, I'm sure he wouldn't let us forget that he knows it. But for a guy who didn't know the capacity of the stadium, he did know that the next guest, Dean Blevins, fell on the ice this past winter.

GOING STRAIGHT?

Maurice Clarett’s name was back on the local sport talk circuit this week. In one of the July Peanut Galleries, it was mentioned that the ex-con had enrolled at Ohio State with the intention of getting a bachelor's degree in Geriatrics and Gerontology and setting his life on a positive course based on the time he had to reflect while serving about three and a half years in prison. At the time, I praised him for making a wise decision and wished him well in his schooling. I assume that goal has now been put on hold based on an announcement he made earlier this week.

Mo signed with the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL (United Football League for the acronym challenged) after a tryout with the team. He needed the permission of the court to leave Ohio to participate in the tryout and will need similar permission to work out-of-state since there are no UFL franchises in Ohio. That should be no problem, as Clarett paid his proverbial "debt to society" just like Mike Vick did. Mo will have a chance to become a professional football player if he can still bring it, but it has been a long time since he has been in a football game that counted. Stay tuned!

My advice to Clarett is to not give up the goal of getting a college degree even if he makes the Nighthawks. It will help him in his life after football, though I don’t know that many employers who prefer employees with prison backgrounds.

And speaking of athlete convicts, the name of Plaxico Burress made local sports talk this week when it was reported that the former Super Bowl star came up short in his bid for work release during his two-year prison sentence in a gun case. The denial could keep him behind bars until at least next spring.

THE "BIG O" IN THE OVAL OFFICE!

Last time I checked, close to 13 million people have watched the double rainbow guy's video on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQSNhk5ICTI. I wonder if that many people watched President Obama's speech on Iraq Tuesday night? If I had to guess - I'd go with the Under. Obama overused the TV in his first three months and now people are tuning him out.

GOODBYE DIBBLE! WE HATE TO SEE YOU GO!

Back in mid-June after his first couple of starts, people were already inducting Stephen Strasburg into the Baseball Hall of Fame, but not the Peanut Gallery, which said the jury is out, so let's wait for a while.

The bad news for Washington National fans is Strasburg is supposed to undergo Tommy John (pictured left) surgery on his right elbow Friday (9/3) and may miss the entire 2011 season. Nationals’ color commentator, Rob Dibble, knocked Strasburg for a lack of toughness when he came out of a game with pain in his forearm last week. Dibble said that the pitcher should "stop crying" & "suck it up".

Because of those comments, he was fired by the team. That's the good news for Washington fans.

CRIER'S CORNER - OKLAHOMA SOONERS (SR)

Hopefully, the bullies open 2010 by destroying Utah State because immediately afterward, Florida State’s speed, and Air Force’s unique offensive system have the potential to create snags for an overrated favorite.

Then, what’s this? The Sooners actually go on the road to play a power conference opponent with speed on both sides of the ball that can score points? A week before the Texas game? Good luck at Cincinnati.

Quarterback Landry Jones was last seen throwing every other pass into the waiting arms of a defensive back last season. He’ll improve, but he’s not Sam Bradford and neither are his receivers. The offensive line has a monkey on its back to shed. The Sooners are getting a lot of love for returning nine starters…who helped average 28.3 points per game a year ago after the prior group had averaged 51 ppg. Early on, Oklahoma is still an overrated entity based on what happened two years ago.
The defense was terriffic last season. “I think any time you’re in the top 1 or 2 in scoring defense, total defense, creating turnovers, you’re doing a pretty good job defensively", said Coach Stoops. Yes, but maybe not good enough for sustained profitability until Big 12 season arrives.

CRIER'S CORNER: BETTOR ALERT - BLOWOUT OPPORTUNITIES ARE OUT THERE!

The following information is compliments of my handicapping forecasting team at Sports Reporter:

"Oddsmakers and sportsbooks aren't as mystically correct as many think. They're just doing their job via the formula.

The 10-year table below lists College Football game-result margins vs. the spread on the left, then the number of instances, and the overall percentage that the number represents to the right.

Margin vs. Spread Game Count Frequency

push, .5 - 422, 6.1%
1, 1.5  - 334, 4.8%
2, 2.5 - 328,  4.7%
3, 3.5 - 369, 5.3%
4, 4.5 - 366, 5.3%
5, 5.5 - 331, 4.8%
6, 6.5 - 329, 4.8%
7, 7.5 - 310, 4.5%
8, 8.5 - 295, 4.3%
9, 9.5 - 300, 4.3%
10, 10.5 - 285, 4.1%
11, 11.5 - 260, 3.8%
12, 12.5 - 232, 3.4%
13 13.5 - 239, 3.5%
14, 14.5 - 265, 3.8%
15, 15.5 - 221, 3.2%
16,16.5 - 167, 2.4%
17, 17.5 - 202, 2.9%
18, 18.5 - 160, 2.3%
19, 19.5 - 150, 2.2%
20, 20.5 - 147, 2.1%
21, 21.5 - 137, 2.0%
22 and up - 1,058, 15.4%

TOTAL 6,907 -…, 100%

Slightly more games land from 15 to 21 points away from the spread than games that land from a push up to 2.5 points away from the spread. Should it really be surprising that the pointspread group with the highest percentage of results (6.1%) is push to 1/2-point? After all, oddsmakers have been making football lines for about 60 years now. Is that the best they can do after all these years, make lines that match the game result 6 times out of 100?"

Yes, it is, because lines are merely based on past scores, and slight adjustments for anticipation of customer tendencies. They are not based on any real superior knowledge the linemaker or sportsbook has over the average bettor." END.
