SOCCER PLAYER TAKES A LEAK ON THE FIELD!

FROM THE HMW MAILBAG:

MANChild Swagga left a comment on Craig Shelton’s post of 12/31 "HOMICIDAL HUGS - CRAIG SHELTON - DECEMBER 31, 2010...": (http://sheltonmedia.blogspot.com/2010/12/homocidal-hugs-craig-shelton-december.html):

"YO... respects man, I didn't expect this at all, but am glad that you came hard. I agree with just about everything you've said, although I've never worked with these radio cats around here. I am totally turned off by the "always wrong yet pompous" attitude that they have and continue to spew on the airwaves. Classic stuff man... looking forward to more of this in 2011. I love that quote: "I know who you characters really are and I don't respect most of what I see. YOU DON'T ACT LIKE MEN, YOU ACT LIKE CHILDREN. You're always correct. You're always the smartest guys in the room. Your show is the 'greatest show on earth'. Your station is the greatest station in town! (That's regardless of the numbers saying "not so much".) OUCH!" END.

Earlis responded to the 1/3 post "JEFF BAGWELL: "I NEVER USED STEROIDS!" - MIKE IN D..." (http://sheltonmedia.blogspot.com/2011/01/jeff-bagwell-i-never-used-steroids-mike.html):

“I hope Bagwell makes it eventually... Has a helluva lot of walks in his career also..he certainly had the opportunity to use steriods...call me a "homer"... I think he deserved the benefit of the doubt...I would think that if nothing comes up negative over the next two to five years his luck could change. Right now all the great players of that era get painted with the same brush....the court of public opinion does not operate on the rule of law....stupidity and hypocrisy often dominate the train of thought of the court of public opinion...I just hope fairness and common sense prevail in that decision someday...Jeff has earned that much from the sportswriters just by the way he played the game." END.

TIGER TO SON: SORRY CHARLIE, BUT I WILL MISS YOUR BIRTHDAY!

Remember last year when Tiger Woods made his bullshit image rehabilitation and apology speech. In it, he said that he had learned the need to be a better father for his two kids and that in his revival, he would never miss one of their birthdays. That statement seemed more like a statement written by an image consultant.

It turns out that Tiger may have forgotten all about being a better father and being there for his kids’ birthdays already because he will be in Dubai next month for the Omega Dubai Desert Classic (February 10-13) instead of wherever his kid, Charlie, will be to celebrate his second birthday on February 8.

As a result, we have two examples of hypocrisy here. Firstly, Tiger will be away on his kid’s birthday. That means his statement was pure bullshit from the outset or it means his commitment to keeping his word does not carry much weight. However, maybe Tiger will give Charlie a phone call on his birthday.

And secondly, the main reason he will be in Dubai is to collect the appearance fee offered to him for showing up there. In the US, the PGA does not allow appearance fees for any of its tour events because appearance fees have been known to allow some top players to tank it in minor events once they have received the appearance fee. However, the PGA looks the other way when its tour members go overseas to collect appearance fees.

NUMBER 15 COMING OUT WITH A BOOK!

Speaking of Tiger, do you remember Loredana Jolie? If not, she claimed to be #15 on Tiger Woods’ mistress list.

Well, she’s back in the news now. According to the NY Post, the 27-year-old former Playboy model said that she is on a mission to catch men who are lying and she is through with married men.

She might be surprised to learn that women who have affairs with men who tell them that they are married, are associates of a lie. I don’t know if Tiger told Ms. Jolie that he was married, but if she  reads the newspaper or has a TV, I would expect her to figure it out.

It’s nice to know that Loredana is done with married guys. I guess that she may feel guilty that some may consider her a “home wrecker”. I assume she will talk about it in her tell-all book that is coming to a bookstore near you. It’s entitled, ‘’The Real Diary of Loredana Jolie.’’ That’s not to confuse you with her fake diary, which might be a more interesting read.

COOLEST SPORTS NICKNAMES: #15 - “THE CHIEF”

Robert Parish got his “The Chief” nickname from Boston Celtic teammate, Cedric Maxwell, who thought the stoic, quiet Parish reminded him of Chief Bromden from the movie, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”

THIS IS FUNNY BECAUSE IT'S THE TRUTH!

FLUB OF THE DAY

On SR610 usually during the Mike Meltser Show (10-11 AM daily), there is a promo narrated by a young woman regarding the Westwood One Radio Network. It is a one-minute update which sometimes advertises an upcoming game on Westwood One. On Thursday morning (1/6) the promo mentioned that Seattle’s Matt Hasselback might miss this week’s upcoming game against the Rams. The truth is that the game was played this past Sunday (1/2). This is not the first time that these one-minute promos were not of a timely nature.

MORE EVIDENCE THAT THE WIDE RECEIVER IS THE LEAST IMPORTANT POSITION IN FOOTBALL!

When "forecasting" handicapping football games, the Crier mostly always says that when a wide receiver is out for a team, many people overrate that position’s importance to a team more than any other. This past season, we have more proof of that.

The Bengals covered all their games in which Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco did not play. Owens had fair statistics this season: 72 catches, 983 yards, 9 TDs. He was seen encouraging teammates – as long as he was getting his. And while he was getting his, his team was losing because it had to get away from what it did to win last season, which was establish the run. Owens is all false hustle. His team is trailing and he’s getting catches, so he runs around trying to motivate everyone. If he’s not getting catches, then he only moves his mouth to complain, whether the team is winning or losing.

What was the New England Patriots’ record after they released supposedly great receiver Randy Moss, who makes incredible one-handed touchdown catches? It was 11-1 SU, 9-3 ATS. Gee, how could that be, when Moss was such an incredible player for them? They even beat Minnesota, the team that picked him up, after the Vikings picked him up! Poor Brad Childress. Favre and Moss on the same offense for only a few weeks, and Childress was almost instant toast.

Minnesota’s record with Moss was 1-3 SU, 0-3-1 ATS. After Moss was booted out of Minnesota and picked up by Tennessee, the Titans went 1-7 SU, 3-5 ATS. Tennessee’s head coach Jeff Fisher, the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL, was the subject of a team head honcho meeting immediately after the season’s final game to decide whether they should fire him or not. Coach killers and team killers; that’s what cranky wide receivers are, and wide receivers are a dime a dozen.

Who made the miracle catch in the Super Bowl that extended the New York Giants game-winning drive that enabled Plaxico Burress to catch the game-winning touchdown pass from overrated Eli Manning a few minutes later? David Tyree. Where is Tyree now? Retired, at age 30. Couldn’t make the team in 2009. Anyone could have made that catch. A receiver – any receiver - needs an accurate quarterback with time to throw, which requires a good offensive line, and a decent running game as a diversion to help get the receiver open.

By the way, where is Burress now? In jail! Of course. Where else? Burress was the rare, difference-making wide receiver, but being an actual difference-maker on the field wasn’t his top priority in life. His top priority in life was being a general nuisance.

All you need is a guy with good hands and adequate NFL speed who will run a route as he is told.

2010 WAS A VERY BAD YEAR FOR THIS GUY!

For almost 20 years we heard constantly how he played “like a kid out there.” Then 2010 came.

He kicked off 2010 by throwing one of the worst interceptions in playoff history to keep his team out of the Super Bowl. He unretired again. He got busted for trying to cheat on his wife. He played truly awful football. He saw his consecutive games streak end. He got fined by the NFL.

There really wasn’t a news cycle that went by last year that didn’t include some sort of new and humiliating story about him. Normally it would be mean-spirited to laugh at one's misfortune. But here’s the thing: mostly everyone now hates him. That’s the one thing he achieved in his final return to the NFL: he managed to become despised by a large segment of the population.

DECEMBER ARBITRON RATINGS

During the month of December, KFNC (97.5 FM – The Ticket) led the four English speaking Houston sports talk radio stations in the 25-54 male demographic. It led in every part of the day except the evening, which continues to be dominated by KILT (SR610).

According to Arbitron's overall ratings (age 12-and-over), SR610 is in the lead with a 0.9 share followed by 97.5 (0.6), Sports Talk 790 (0.4), and 1560TheGame (0.3).

As predicted here over a month ago, KODA (99.1 FM), with its annual Christmas music programming dominated Houston radio with a 9.2 share, four times the total of the sports talk stations combined. Including KODA, 19 radio stations in the Houston-Galveston area had a larger share than the four sports talk radio stations combined.

ANOTHER HEAD COACH WHO NEVER COACHED BITES THE DUST!

Mike Haywood was born in Houston, attended St. Thomas HS here, and then Notre Dame as a wide receiver. He then had college assistant coaching positions at Minnesota, Army, Ohio U., Ball State, LSU, Texas, and Notre Dame, before taking the head coach job at Miami OH, where he had a 10-15 record over the last two seasons. After going 1-11 last year, the team turned it around this season with a 9-4 record and a spot in the Go Daddy.Com Bowl vs. Middle Tennessee.

On December 16 of last year, Haywood was offered and accepted the head football coaching position at the University of Pittsburgh. However, Haywood was arrested in South Bend, IN, on December 31, on felony domestic violence charges arising from a custody dispute. He was released on bond on January 1, and hours later was fired by Pitt.

Now we can add Haywood to a growing list of coaches who in recent years signed on to coach new teams, but never actually made it to the field/arena before they were fired or forced to resign. Other recent coaches on the list are:

George O’ Leary was hired as head football coach at Notre Dame in 2001 and then fired days later when it was discovered that he had falsified his résumé by claiming that he had a Masters Degree from a school that did not exist and that he was a three-year letterman in football at the University of New Hampshire where he never played a game.

Mike Price was named head coach of Alabama in December 2002 and then fired in May 2003 after reports of foreplay with an exotic dancer and public drunkenness during a trip to Pensacola, FL, where Price was playing in a golf tournament. A 2003 story in SI (Sports Illustrated for the acronym-challenged) said that Price had been seen at a strip club. He allegedly later checked into a local hotel with a dancer from the club. The magazine further alleged Price had sex with her, a claim which Price denied, although he acknowledged being intoxicated on the evening in question. He filed a $20 million libel and defamation suit against SI. Price received some vindication in 2005 when the magazine settled the lawsuit for an undisclosed sum.

Tim Welsh was named head basketball coach at Hofstra last April 1. He was arrested for DWI on April 30 and according to the arresting officer he was passed out behind the wheel at a traffic light. On May 3, Welsh resigned from his position as Hofstra.

ODDS AND ENDS:

1. With the Patriots 2010 regular season record at 14-2, Bill Belichick is the only coach in NFL history to win 14 or more games in four different seasons. Remember that NFL seasons were less than 14 games in length until 1961 and then expanded to 16 games in 1978. Nevertheless, the fact that Belichick’s teams achieved 14 wins or more in four different seasons is impressive.

 2. Here is another example of why the NFL exhibition season means very little with regard to a team's record. The San Francisco 49ers went 4-0 in those meaningless games. When it counted, the Niners went 6-10 in the weakest division in the NFL and ended up firing their coach, Mike Singletary. And the NFL requires that fans pay full regular season prices to watch exhibition games.

3. ESPN football analyst, Tom Jackson, reminds me of the guy at my old company who was around for years and who wasn't good at his job, yet nobody could get rid of him because of his seniority and probably because someone on top was protecting him.

CRIER'S CORNER

BASKETBALL ACTION

Yesterday’s Record ATS: 3-3
Cumulative Season Record ATS: 216-139

TODAY'S ACTION

NBA

DENVER (-4.5) over SACRAMENTO*
Home, away, it doesn’t matter, the Kings are just a bad team. Second year player Tyreke Evans has struggled and Californians have just played with zero discipline. They have been crushed by good teams and found ways to lose against other bad teams. Nuggets are third in the league in scoring while the Kings had only scored better than five teams to close out 2010. DENVER, 110 – 99

COLLEGE HOOPS

CINCINNATI* (-9) over XAVIER
Both sides tee’d up for the city’s Civil War, with Xavier giving way grudgingly to Florida in Gators’ successful revenge bid on New Year’s Eve, while Cincy took full advantage of Seton Hall (a Best Bet here), winning with something left later that evening. This Musketeer edition was weakened when frosh G/F Jay Canty incurred a stress fracture in his right foot. Cincy may not be Final Four material, but Bearcats play together beautifully, and that clampdown defense covers a multitude of sins. CINCINNATI, 67-51.

FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL* (+3.5) over ARKANSAS STATE
Red Wolves off huge quintuple-revenge win over Western Kentucky Saturday night, leaving door open for FIU. FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL, 66-64.

WESTERN KENTUCKY* (-6.5) over DENVER
Pioneers don’t boast the caliber of material to take road advantage of Hilltoppers’ all-too-frequent defensive lapses. WESTERN KENTUCKY, 74-59.

DETROIT (+5.5) over LOYOLA-CHICAGO*
Ramblers continue to perform with heart while not at full strength, but Titan lesser effort/big effort pattern could well prevail for Detroit, off bitter OT loss to Wisky-Milwaukee – at home! Believe in this Titan combination, as they ascend up the ladder, one step back – two steps forward! DETROIT, 68-61.

HAWAII* (-6) over IDAHO
Serious, respectable road effort against conference power Utah State showed us more about Rainbow Warriors than anything they accomplished in their home-cooking tournament over the holidays, though UH will be happy to be home after no-show at Nevada. Hawaii actually enjoys rare physical advantages over this foe, and can’t envision what Tater Tots are going to do about it. HAWAII, 74-60.
