COOL ATHLETE NAME:
AMAZING COMEBACK!
Last week, Colorado was leading Kansas, 45-17, with 12 minutes left in the game, and the Crier who was laying 8.5 points with the Buffs was feeling confident and ready to check off a Win. Not so fast, my friend! The Jayhawks scored 35 points in the last 12 minutes to pull out a 52-45 comeback win.
If you think the above was a nice comeback, you may remember this classic high school playoff game from November 1994 between Plano East and Tyler John Tyler, which saw Tyler leading 41-17 with less than three minutes left: http://www.guitarsolos.com/videos-plano-east-john-tyler-football-%5BZHkABO0VwCg%5D.cfm
The announcers are absolutely hilarious! A few of the announcer quotes are:
"Break out the Oreos baby!"
"I'll tell you, I wet my britches over here!"
"God bless those kids."
"I'm sick, I wanna throw up."

COLLEGE HOOPS
The college hoops season began on Monday; at least for gambling purposes. As in the past few seasons, I believe that college basketball is ridiculously overexposed on TV. The college basketball regular season itself is a four-month drama whose outcome is "March Madness".
There will be a few games in the early part of the season before New Year’s Day that will have a compelling reason to pay close attention to, but the real action begins in early January. That is when every team in Division 1 tries to get themselves into the 68-team bracket for The Tournament. The number of Division 1 schools is 347; only one in five teams gets to participate in "March Madness".
As the season starts, the poll-voting prognosticators have anointed Duke as the pre-season #1 team in the country based on whatever methodology these folks use to make such predictions. It is worth mentioning though that there are some bits of recent history that might indicate they are correct. Consider the current status of Dukie coach Mike Krzyzewski:
He is the coach of the reigning NCAA men’s basketball champion.
He is the coach of the reigning FIBA World Champion basketball team.
He is the coach of the reigning Olympic men’s basketball team.
That set of accomplishments is very impressive!
Of course, there is a downside to the start of college basketball season and that would be the return of Dick Vitale to the airwaves. His voice is the broadcasting equivalent of a vuvuzela – loud, annoying, and non-stop.
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT:
Explain in 25 words or less the difference between the producer of a local sports talk program and an intern that gets paid.
???QUESTION OF THE DAY???
It was mentioned here yesterday that ESPN announced this week that Jon Miller and Joe Morgan will no longer do the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball game of the week. Though I don’t watch Sunday Night Baseball very much, there will be many who will miss listening to Miller, but will miss Morgan a lot less.
However, think of the fate of the guy who runs the website, http://www.firejoemorgan.com/. What will he be doing to consume his time and energy now?
CRIER'S CORNER:
IS AUBURN THE NEXT UNDEFEATED TEAM TO LOSE?
Since there are no head-to-head matchups in the Crier's BCS Elimination Tournament this week, the Crier is selecting the Georgia-Auburn game as his "Elimination Game of the Week":
GEORGIA at AUBURN*
“You feel it physically, emotionally and it does wonders in a person’s mind and especially in my heart”, said Cam Newton last week in response to alleged recruiting violations surrounding the QB. It isn’t all about football and Heisman trophy anymore and that isn’t positive for Tiger backers.
That said, the distractions will be just part of the reason why Auburn falls to UGA this week. At 5-5, Georgia has pretty much been written off by college football pundits. Bottom line is that this team can move the football. Redshirt QB Aaron Murray has settled in nicely and he has some big-time weapons on the perimeter in WRs Green and Durham, and a great down-the-seam play-maker in TE Charles.
Auburn’s defense has been average at best, ranking 57th in total defense, one spot behind Toledo. The pass D has been the soft spot, allowing opposing QBs to complete over 63% of their throws for 16 TDs to just 8 interceptions. Georgia is a team that can take advantage.
Defensively, the Dawgs had two weeks to prep for “The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry,” given that they played Idaho State last week. Their 3-4 defense puts a premium on sideline-to-sideline speed, and that is key when trying to contain Newton and the fast Tiger tailbacks. So whether or not Newton took the dough, Dawgs catch a Tiger by the toe. GEORGIA, 34-31.
BASKETBALL
Yesterday’s Record ATS: 1-1
Cumulative Season Record ATS: 26-10
Today’s Action (for reading purposes only):
NBA
MILWAUKEE (+6.5) over ATLANTA*
The ying and yang of the game will be in full view as the Hawks will try to run and the Bucks will try to get into their half court offense. Bucks had to travel last night after hosting and scoring 41 in the first quarter against the Knicks and cruising to victory. Bucks hit 13 of first 15 shots and that won’t happen again. Hawks hungry after losing last pair and get instant offense from 6th man Jamal Crawford. When Josh Smith slashes instead of settling for the 3-ball, he really impacts the game. ATLANTA, 102- 101
CHARLOTTE (Pick ‘em) over TORONTO*
Almost a must game for Bobcats with only one win so far. They have played okay though losing to Spurs by only 4 and Magic by 3. How can a guy 7 foot only get one rebound in a game? Ask Andrea Bargnani about his home game against Warriors Monday. Canadians struggling, lean toward visitors. They lost 5 of first 6 and only beat the shaky Cavs. They were down by 23 at one point to the Blazers and were outscored in 3 of the 4 quarters. Charlotte off to a poor start, but it is not because they don’t play hard on D. Only two teams got to a hundred in first six games and they held Magic to 91 in the loss last Saturday. CHARLOTTE, 94-84
COLLEGE HOOPS
COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON (+14.5) over MARYLAND*
Terps ran Seattle off the floor, Monday, but it wasn't a good sign that Mary's turnover total matched their winning margin - 29! Seven TOs by G Adrian Bowie surely did not bring joy to Gary Williams' heart. Settle down, Mary, says Gary. Old ACC hand Bobby Cremins kicks off his fifth year at C of C, and nothing gets Cremins' attention more readily than an underdog shot at an ACC foe. One setup was strong enough for Cremins to beat the Tarheels (admittedly, not a vintage edition) last season, and with Andrew Goudelock at guard, another sustained upset try is more than possible, though Cremins' broad backcourt contingent is a tad green, and wise guys have already sampled this spread. MARYLAND, 84-77.
PITTSBURGH* (-23.5) over ILLINOIS-CHICAGO
Benefitting from the short trip and some early matchup advantages,Rhody gave the Panthers all they could handle in Monday's tourney opener before yielding to Jamie Dixon's depth - a boon for second-half buffs.Having gained their sea legs, look for the established class to perform more alertly vs. the rekindling Flames. New UIC HC Howard Moore is an old Northwest-Side-of-Chicago kid, a product of Bo Ryan's successful Wisconsin program, and likely a good fit down the road, but the cupboard's nearly bare, and Flames were winless on the road in '09-'10, barring their trip to Evansville within ESPN's unique Bracketbusters format. Tall hill for Illini to climb, here, but only tender mercy should mitigate this margin. PITTSBURGH, 85-55.
