NBA ACTION

Yesterday’s Record ATS: 2-1
Cumulative Season Record ATS: 17-6

Today’s Game (for reading purposes only):

CHICAGO* (-7) over NEW YORK

Great match up down low with Joakim Noah and Amar’e Stoudamire with the edge toward the Chicago center because he D’s up and is super-active. New York’s Russian center Timofey Mozgoz has a lot to learn about this league. The run and gun offense of New York will be tested because the Bulls are athletic enough to cover and they have one of the best points in the sport in Derrick Rose. Kyle Korver will extend the floor as a very good outside gunner, he moves the ball, and he’ll take up the slack until Carlos Boozer returns. CHICAGO, 111-97

2-Year-Old Fillies, Turf

The filly on the rail, Dos Lunas, broke her maiden by six lengths in a sprint on this course, and is adding blinkers. This will freak out all the jockeys in the field, who will be chasing her to make sure she doesn’t get loose. This will freak out the jockey, who, with blinkers added will be getting more early speed, with 13 fillies outside of him, so he’ll go too fast trying to stay clear of them. Translation: pick a closer. Will it be a closer from Europe? Well, why bet on a 2-year-old filly from Europe? When they sprint over there, they sprint in a straight line. Most of the sprint courses have no turns. This course has two turns. Ever try to get a 2-year-old filly to handle two turns at top speed when they are used to zero turns? Me neither, but I imagine it’s not easy to do. Therefore: Canadian- or American-raced fillies who have been around two turns AND come from off the pace: 4-KATHMANBLU, 7-WINTER MEMORIES, 9-FANCY POINT, 11-MORE THAN REAL.

Filly and Mare Sprint

7-GABBY’S GOLDEN GAL has not raced since January. The others have, and nobody looks too dominant. She’s trained by Bob Baffert. Good enough for us. She beat Proviso in her first and only start as a 4-year-old. Proviso is 4-for-4 since and the only horses besides her that beat Proviso in Proviso’s last nine starts since August of 2009 are Life Is Sweet and Goldikova, who have both won Breeders’ Cup races. Hello. 2-SARA LOUISE needed her first start since November 29 last year and gets a rider switch from Prado to Dettori. Prado is a bum. Dettori is great.

Juvenile Fillies

When only one European-based horse shows up in a $2 million-dollar race, two things are possible: 1) The overseas people fear that they can’t beat a few strong U.S.-based horses and don’t bother to waste their time and money shipping over, 2) The overseas people have tons of respect for the lone filly and don’t bother wasting their time and money shipping over. Let’s go with reason #2. 2-
THEYSKEN’S THEORY just raced against an undefeated filly named White Moonstone, who is now 4-for-4. Anybody in this race unbeaten? Yes. One filly is unbeaten. Awesome Feather is 5-for-5, all at Calder, the last three in restricted stakes, and is trained by Stanley (Who?) Gold. Hey, good luck. By a quirk of the Daily Racing Form protocol, the company lines don’t show how good Theysken’s Theory’s competition has been. She beat Cochabamba and Cape Dollar in the Prestige Stakes at Goodwood on August 28. Cape Dollar ran a bad race after that, but then she won the Rockfel Mile at Newmarket in late September. The little ‘’italic’’ thingie doesn’t show that she won her next start, because she didn’t win her next start. But she won the one after that, and who ran second? Cochabamba. Meanwhile, who rode White Moonstone in her win against Theysken’s Theory at Ascot? Frankie Dettori. Who is riding Theysken’s Theory today? Frankie Dettori, with the filly getting Lasix for the first time. Meanwhile, says Todd Pletcher about his filly 3-R HEAT LIGHTNING: ‘’I think we ran the best horse in the Frizette. When she didn’t break well, she put herself in a tough spot. What I did like, in spite of that and being covered up and having to wait for a long time, she showed a lot of determination the last eighth of a mile.’’ Fair enough.

Filly and Mare Turf

Holy cow. Don’t you love it when Andre Fabre sends a European Group 1 and Group 2 winning filly that normally races against males, into a distance race loaded mostly with American-based ordinary fillies, some who originated in Europe, but never advanced to the level this filly has? And he stiffed 1-PLUMANIA in the Arc de Triomphe last month, so she’d be nice odds in this race. The guy is a genius. 7-MIDDAY won the race last year at Santa Anita, but this ain’t Santa Anita and Plumania saves all the ground from her post. 10-RED DESIRE needed her October 2 start at Belmont, an obvious prep for this after she’d been off since May. If Desormeaux doesn’t stop at the grandstand for a mint julep and chase it down with a beer in the stretch, she should be right there at the finish.

Ladies Classic

8-UNRIVALED BELLE likes the track. Trainer Bill Mott laid her off from August 1 to October 2, which was very nice. In her third and second starts back, she tracked a lone-speed winner and ran second each time. In the October 2 return race, she ran second to Life at Ten when she was spotting Life and Ten current conditioning. Life at Ten ain’t never run at Churchill and will not appreciate being on the rail in a large field. John Velazquez had to extricate from the inside in her last start to get 3-wide. 6-PERSISTENTLY is a two-turn horse that has been stuck running in one-turn races because she is owned by the Phipps Stable and as trustees, or major fooshie-wooshies fa-fas or whatever they are at NYRA, they stick to running at Belmont Park a lot to help out a place where only 2,000 people go. Note that when they sent her to Saratoga to run around 2 turns, she won twice.
