AIN’T NO STOPPING YATES YET, AS THEY STOMP ANOTHER OPPONENT! - MIKE IN DA - NOVEMBER 16, 2010

AIN’T NO STOPPING YATES YET, AS THEY STOMP ANOTHER OPPONENT!

59TH STRAIGHT WIN IS A BREEZE, AS YATES HOOPS IS STILL THE #1 FEEL-GOOD STORY IN HOUSTON SPORTS IN 2010!

YATES 128, DICKINSON 65

The defending “mythical” 2009-10 national high school champion Yates Lions opened up their 2010-11 season on Monday night with an easy 128-65 win over the Dickinson Gators at Delmar Fieldhouse in front of an appreciative pro-Yates crowd. Oh, by the way, they are also back-to-back Class 4A Texas State Champions and the win was their 59th straight going back to December 2008.

WE TOLD YOU IT WAS GOING TO BE A BUMPY RIDE!

With all the starters gone from last season’s team and just four returning letterman, the Lions with the arrival of new blood, broke the game wide open in the opening quarter by busting out to a 19-4 lead and led 33-14 after the first eight minutes. After that, the Lions were on cruise control except for a small stretch nearing the end of the second quarter when the Gators cut the lead to 48-32, but Yates put a quash to that by closing out the period on an 11-0 run, including a three-pointer from midcourt at the buzzer by newcomer Kenya Jackson, to take a 59-32 lead at the half.

Coach Greg Wise gave all of his 14 players a chance to show the crowd what to expect in 2010-11 and that’s just more of the same that we witnessed over the last three seasons and now into the fourth. There was the usual full-court press and hectic pace that Yates followers have grown accustomed to. That's in addition to Yates once again hitting the century mark in scoring.

The team was rusty at times due to the fact that this was their first full game together under regular game conditions, but with their depth and Coach Wise’s teaching ability, it looks like it’s going to be another fruitful season on Sampson Street, as the boys continue to bring "32 minutes of heat" every game.

The Lions who beat Dickinson in the opening game last season by 62 points, 142-80, bettered that by a point last night, winning by 63. The Lions hit the 100 mark in the first minute of the final quarter, as Coach Wise freely substituted his bench all throughout the game.

The top scorers for the Lions were junior forward, Damyeon Dotson, who had 20 points, Pearland senior transfer, Shai Fields with 19, and junior Clyde Santee (pictured) with 15, who has played on the two previous state champion teams.

Yates’ next game is Saturday afternoon at I PM at Barnett Fieldhouse vs. Sam Houston who they beat last year by 92 points, 163-71.

PS – The Yates football team (9-2) plays LaMarque HS (7-3) at Delmar Stadium at 2 PM on Saturday afternoon in the Class 4A Division II playoffs in Region III. Yates fans will have to choose between the two games, as there is a time conflict between them, but the more resourceful fans should be able to catch the basketball game and then the second half of the football game.

I brought this to HISD's attention yesterday and they are looking into it because they don't want me to die in a car accident while speeding to the football game.
