THE YATES BASKETBALL TEAM IS BACK, SO BUCKLE UP BECAUSE IT'S GOING TO BE A BUMPY RIDE AGAIN:

BIRTHDAYS DISCONTINUED IN THE MORNING?

For a whole week now, SR610’s Morning Show with Marc Vandermeer and John Lopez (6 AM – 10 AM daily) has skipped its brief (a couple of minutes) birthday segment that is usually at approximately 9:50 AM daily. Hopefully, it was not an oversight on their part, but a decision to discontinue the practice entirely. SR610 is the only sports station in town that has needless birthday segments.

If SR610 wants to celebrate birthdays so badly, why not have the listeners fill out forms with their birthdays on it when they sign up at the website and announce those on the appropriate day the first time that the individual's birthday comes up on the calendar. SR610 can even mention the listener’s age for age demographic purposes and/or the part of town he lives in. That would be more fun than mentioning the birthday of the drummer for some band many of us never heard of.

Now the Peanut Gallery's (PG) goal is to have the much longer birthday segment on the Afternoon Show discontinued, so that they can get more calls in before the 4 PM hour that usually has a guest.

Whoever puts the afternoon birthdays together with sound bites has been doing a good job, but in PG's poll of 23 SR610 afternoon listeners, 17 of them thought it was dumb/stupid, while four thought it was fun/cute, and two didn't know WTF I was talking about.

COOL ATHLETE NAME:

GOOD THING I DIDN’T TAKE THIS BET!

Below is a list of ten football programs listed in alphabetical order:

Alabama
Florida
Florida State
Miami
Michigan
Notre Dame
Oklahoma
Penn State
Texas
USC

I’m sure you’ll agree that these ten teams always compete at the highest level of the sport. Nevertheless, as of this week, none of these “football factories” is ranked in the Top Ten in the BCS polls.

At the beginning of the season, if someone wanted to bet you even money that after Week #11 of the College Football season that none of the above teams would be in the BCS Top Ten, you probably would have busted out your wallet to see how much money you had available to wager on it.

FROM THE HMW MAILBAG:

Timothy left a comment re Rick Tindal’s post of 11/12, "ARE YOU SPINNING YOUR WHEELS HOUSTON SPORTS TALK H...": (http://sheltonmedia.blogspot.com/2010/11/are-you-spinning-your-wheels-houston.html):

"So basically you are saying sports talk personalities reduce themselves to fans thereby removing the objectivity of their job? The only bad thing about this article was referencing Dylan as a real personality to begin with. Dylan is similar to living next to a railroad line or an airport, simply annoying noise." END.

Anonymous left a comment on Craig Shelton’s post of 11/14, "WHAT DOES CHRIS SOLIS ADD TO 1560 THE GAME'S MORNI...": (http://sheltonmedia.blogspot.com/2010/11/what-does-chris-solis-add-to-1560-games.html):

"Thank you for pointing this out! Chris Solis is only there because he is Lance's (Zierlein) childhood friend. KGOW needs to change their name to KFRIENDS because that's all that is there. I have no problem with bringing friends as long as they bring something to the table like John Harris. Solis is there to do exactly what? He doesn't have an opinion and he is not funny. If Solis isn't a friend of Zierlein would he be given a chance to appear on air? That answer is NO!! It's no surprise KGOW's ratings are where they are right now. I hope they aren't paying Solis to bring nothing to the table. Thanks for bringing up the obvious about this no-talented on-air individual." END.

REX RYAN IN DRAG!

FORMER COLORADO COACH MAY HAVE A DILEMMA THIS WEEKEND!

Two Saturdays ago (11/6), in the fourth quarter of the Colorado/Kansas game, Colorado led 45-17 with twelve minutes left in the game. As mentioned here last week, the Buffaloes found a way to surrender five TDs in the fourth quarter and lost the game, 52-45. Remember, this is against a 3-7 Kansas team, which never should be confused with a Top Ten team.

The result of that game was that Colorado fired coach, Dan Hawkins, whose tenure at Colorado had yet to produce a winning season. To be fair, they did finish 6-6 in 2007 and went to the Independence Bowl in which they then lost to finish with a 6-7 record. Hawkins was 3-6 this season and 19-39 in his four-plus years at Colorado.

The starting QB for Colorado is Dan Hawkins’ son, Cody, who is a senior. This coming Saturday at home vs. Kansas State, is Colorado’s Senior Day when parents and senior team members are recognized on the field. That could be very interesting, as to how the fans react to Daddy Hawkins’ presence. I'm sure ESPN's SportsCenter will have it in its college football highlights that day.

CRIER'S CORNER

CRIER'S BCS ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT:

Going into Week #7, the Crier’s BCS Elimination Tournament is still at six teams from the original 28 teams, as all six won last week. According to the Crier's rules, Oregon and Stanford are in the lead to meet in the Crier’s version of the BCS Championship Game, which would be a rematch of an earlier season game won by Oregon on their field.

As mentioned previously, the purpose of these rankings is to determine the top two teams standing at the end of play on December 4. Hopefully, the BCS people will have the same two teams as "The Crier" for their championship game when all is said and done.

Below is this week’s rankings and each team’s next opponent:

Rank – Team – Record – This Week’s Game

1 Oregon (10-0) Idle

2 Stanford (9-1) at California

3 TCU (11-0) Idle

4 Auburn (11-0) Idle

5 Boise State (9-0) vs. Fresno State

6 Wisconsin (9-1) at Michigan

Three (Oregon, TCU, and Auburn) of the remaining six teams are idle this upcoming week.

Last week, in the Crier’s BCS Game of the Week, Auburn beat Georgia, 49-31, lowering the Crier’s record in tournament games to 6-6 SU and 7-5 ATS. On Friday, the Crier will release this week's BCS Tourney game for reading purposes only.

BASKETBALL ACTION:

Yesterday’s Record ATS: 4-0
Cumulative Season Record ATS: 42-13

Today’s Action (for reading purposes only):

NBA

MEMPHIS (+8.5) over ORLANDO*
Go with the Grizz here. Complacency, arrogance, tuning out the coach, any or all of these things could be behind the Magic's very shaky start to the year. They have been beaten by good teams like Utah and bad teams like Toronto and they were life and death to get out of Newark, New Jersey, with a one-point win Saturday. If Magic keep on jacking up 25 threes like they did against the Nets, it will cost them. ORLANDO, 105-104

OKLAHOMA CITY at UTAH* (TOTAL UNDER 206.5)
Tough middle game for Thunder with Spurs last night and Rockets and Boston on the horizon. Spurs totally put the claim on the Thunder last night holding them to 38 points in the second half as OK City only shot 31% in the long-ball contest. Whatever Coach Sloan yelled to his team 10 days ago, it sure worked as Jazz have not lost since and won back-to-back in Florida and back-to-back again winning Saturday in Carolina. UTAH, 95-89

COLLEGE HOOPS

PROVIDENCE* (-19) over YALE
Unlike football, not reluctant to return to the winning well back-to-back, especially in early-season non-con action. Yalies surely hold superior hand to what Dartmouth came to the Dunkin’ Donuts table with, on Saturday night, but without Alex Zempier this year, their mediocre shooting, insufficient rebounding, and frequent bouts of matador defense will not serve them well against the re-energized Friars with Coleman and Council racing over, under around and through sluggish Eli defenders. PROVIDENCE, 87-61.

GEORGETOWN* (-20.5) over TULANE
Ah, the Princeton offense – with athletes. Not always blowout potential, but given the state of the Greenies, make an exception. Even noting the departed Greg Monroe, Hoyas will rule on glass, towering over Tulane shrubbery. GEORGETOWN, 81-55.

WELL , SHIVER ME TIMBERS: NOW SETON HALL LOOKS LIKE REAL MENACING PIRATES!

On Friday night, I saw highlights of the Seton Hall -Temple basketball game on ESPN SportsCenter. For the 60 years or so that I have been following college hoops, I remember the Pirates as a team that wore blue uniforms on the road.

Well, in this game they were wearing black uniforms issued by one of their benefactors (Adidas) and not the normal shade of blue. I guess the fact that a couple of former Seton Hall basketball players were arrested recently on a bunch of charges ranging from kidnapping and theft to assault and weapons possession, the Pirate uniforms now have to look threatening, intimidating, and bullying-like.
