THE YEAR IS 2009

Today I contacted Gavin Spittle. Gavin is my new boss here at Sports Radio 610, and I have yet to speak with him since he arrived a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to know from Gavin if me and my good friend and co-host of my show "The Sunday Block Party", Bobby Z (Bobo) would be able to sit down with him and talk?

Bill Van Rysdam had recently been fired by CBS and was replaced with Mr. Spittle, so several of the on-air hosts at the station were uncertain of where they stood with CBS Radio moving forward.

You see folks, my venture into sports media and sports talk radio began with CBS Radio and Sports Radio 610 when Bill Van Rysdam (Bill) who was the program director at the time, gave me a shot at hosting my own weekend sports talk show. Bill and I met when I contacted him at Sports Radio 610 in late 2006.

When I first contacted Bill, I began my conversation by introducing myself over the phone to him as Craig Shelton. Almost immediately, I expressed to Bill that he would likely know me better by my radio caller moniker of "Lesbian Craig". Surprisingly, Bill seemed elated to hear from me and was very polite and receptive to listening to my spill. I told Bill of several projects I was working on at the time and that I wanted to marry a sports talk radio show into the dynamic. Bill agreed to meet with me again, and over the next couple of months we worked out the particulars of the show format and compensation terms. The final benchmark moment of these events was when Bill called me and Bobby up to the station to meet with his boss, GM Laura Morris.

Wow! The lady was so kind to us that it completely confused me for a moment. I guess I expected some corporate beast to walk in the room and go all “Jeepers Creepers” on me and Bobby Z’s eyes or something? ("Jeepers Creepers", greatest movie ever by the way.) We spoke with Laura for a good while and it was very clear she was giving us the once over, as to be expected. I mean let’s be frank folks, Bobo & I are a piece of work and we get that.

We talked about our families with Laura, we talked about our past and present professional history, we talked about our vision, but we didn’t really talk too much about radio. We just tried to really get to know each other on both sides of the fence. That worked well for me mainly because I don’t put on the pretty face very well. I am what I am, and I’m good with it. I believe Laura read me well because I made no attempt to fraud the lady. I just wanted a fair shot at doing radio, no agendas other than success.

I was always loyal to Laura and Bill because they took a chance on me and I will always be grateful for that. Well, enough already about my love affair with Laura Morris and Bill Van Rysdam, back to my meeting with my new boss here at “The Mighty, Mighty, Sports Radio 610”.

It was really weird and kinda bizarre when Bobby and I hooked up before our long awaited meeting with Gavin Spittle. I say that because Bobby and I had completely different mood sets that morning, I was completely upbeat and fired up. Well, as fired up as I could be considering Bobby Z aka “The Unsub” was sitting next to me with the stoic look of a 165 lb. serial killer on his face.

Lmao..I mean the only thing missing when I first got into the car with Bobby was that theme music from my favorite network TV show “Criminal Minds” (damn I love that show!) I’m thinking, “damn bro, what’s the dealio? I mean c’mon, we’ve been waiting to hook up with this guy man, so what’s with the vibe you throwing off bro?” Ha, Bobby Z just turned and looked at me…..TO BE CONTINUED
