RICK SMITH & RICH LORD ARE HONEST

Let me begin by "giving it up" to John Lopez and Marc Vandermeer (how many times will you see JLO spoken before the Voice) on their interviews with all (3)  Houston professional team's General Mangers.   Everyone know, there is only one GM that captured my attention as Morey is an over glorified "Sam McGuffie" (making a lot of moves but in the end no positive yards) and Ed Wade, well he's just Ed.   Of the three, the only General Manager I paid attention to was Rick "chill with former President" Smith.  As I was listening to the interview, there was one thing that caught my attention, Rick openly admitted "he is not familiar with the 34 defense".  After hearing this revelation my fingers begin to twitch.  Below is Rick's Audio.

RICK SMITH

A person like Rick Smith would have been cool to the black community about 28 years ago.  You know, "an executive black dude in a place of power" this would have been awesome in 1983 but in 2011 when there are black relevant people, Rick is simply a failure at General Manager.  This is not the 1940s where we had to cheer Jackie Robinson although we know they were others much more deserving in the Negro League.
If your "Gig" is to root for Rick because he's a "brotha" I would divert your attention to those who are truly successful in their positions:  John W. Thompson, CEO of Symantec,  American Express CEO Kenneth I. Chenault and Time Warner CEO Richard D. Parsons (Oprah, Bill Cosby, Sean Colmes are too easy).  The fiber in my body will not allow me to cheer for failure.  Everything about Rick's tenure with the Texans is failure.  I can go on and on about Rick's misfortunes in Houston including the media's disdain for him.  I knock the media a bit for what they choose to report but in Rick's case, it's warranted because the dude comes off as arrogant.

What really makes me upset about Rick, he's publicized as a General Manager.  In my lifetime, titles such as: President, CEO, Officer, General Manager meant you were an Executor not a Legislator. In Rick's current role, he appears as a legislator, someone involved in policy-making.  Over the weekend, N.D. Kalu and Mike Meltser had John "The General" McClain" on.  The guys begin discussing the authority and power structure of Rick Smith.  It was Kalu's belief if the "word" on Rick is true then he's nothing more than an "over glorified scout" on the other hand, John McClain was telling Kalu, the Texans Organizational Structure is quite normal in the NFL.  I am not here to say who's right or who's wrong but I listen to the way S/R 610 divert all professional football questions to Greg and N.D. when they are in studio and to hear a journalist tell a NFL Vet he's wrong is baffling. John McClain is the man with vast amounts of contacts but I am forced to side with the person that actually played in the league.  I'm clearly on record saying Rick Smith is nothing to me as a General Manager, he has as much POWER as "Green Energy" in Texas.

During Jlo and Marc's interview, "Big Time" Rick ended by saying, he falls to the back "in season" but this time of the year is usually "his time" and if they need to get in touch with him, he's available. OK, this dude is lying to the nth degree, he is almost as phony than certain radio personalities who claim to be real and then lace up their shoes and beat Carl Lewis in the 100 meters.  C'mon Rick, you were no where to be found this season when the Texans were taking the heat.  To be honest, Gary Kubiak was being barbecued as Rick was in the suite box "yakking" it up with the former President.  I am sure Rick's cheerleaders will defend him with the normal  rhetoric and blah blah blah but I am holding firm, Rick is a bad General Manager.  Before you tell me "Rick found Arian Foster", I will reply "he also missed on Pro Bowl CB Tromon Williams".
Please do not engage me on the ineptness of Rick Smith.  Hell, the one thing I felt he did right (getting rid of Dunta Robinson), was also wrong.  Yep I can dislike him for something I wanted because he should be smart enough not to listen to me.

WHAT THE BLEEP IS 3-4 DEFENSE LESBO?

The 3-4 defense is a basic defensive formation that is used by several NFL teams. Bud Wilkenson devised the alignment at the University of Oklahoma in the late 1940s. The alignment features three down lineman and four linebackers in the front seven, thus the name 3-4.

Fair enough, that seem straight forward for the "Average Joe" like myself.  Approximately a month ago, Lesbian Craig called the J&R Show and asked Rich Lord, "can you explain to me in layman's terms what's the 3-4 defense".  Rich Lord panicked and directed the question to Greg Koch who happened to be in studio.  I really like to believe Rich Lord knows what the 3-4 defense is but when I go back and listen to the audio, Lesbo clearly asked him to define it in LAYMAN'S terms.  Layman's terms is not asking Rich to define packages ran out of the 3-4 it's only asking him to say 3 D-linemen and 4 LB's.  Rich Lord being a sideline reporter for the Texans and not knowing basic formations of defenses is funny to me but what is not funny is when you hear your freaking General Manager  say he has limited knowledge of the 3-4 Defense.  Wade Phillips is training Rick Smith on the 3-4?  There are so many ways I can go with this.

I can't fault Rick Smith for not being familiar with the 3-4 defense but I can fault the Texans for proving my point.  These guys have no clue.   Lets look at this in everyday reality. You know something, I am "analogied" out, I can't even think of analogy which would describe this situation.

WRAP IT UP

When I first heard Rick's comments in the interview, I must say, I thought to myself "what else were you expecting idiot, you actually thought this would make sense".  It would be naive of me to believe every General Manager knows it all but it seems extra funny when it's the Texans because it feeds into my own selfish humor of that organization being "Clueless".

TEXANS HIERARCHY

Let me see if I have this "chain of command" right.

  • Bob is over the Texans
  • Cal (Bob's son) is over Rick Smith
  • Jamie Roots is over operations

Pay attention because this is where it gets fuzzy
  • Rick Smith is over player personnel from February - August
  • Gary Kubiak is over  Offensive Players from August - January
  • Wade Phillips is over Defensive Players from August - January
  • Rick is over the chalkboard and erasers during the draft
  • Gary Kubiak is over Rick from August - January
  • Rick Smith is over Wade Phillips before the draft but during the draft Wade Phillips becomes the custodian of defensive players
  • Bum Phillips and Dan Pastroni is over public relations
  • Marc Vandermeer & John McClain is over the Local Media
  • President Bush is over Bob McNair
  • Pastor Caldwell is over the ethical board
  • Dallas Cowboys is over Tailgate Procedure
WHO THE HELL IS IN CHARGE?
