ALL EYES ON NUNO!

NUNO @ NIGHT

The word "cool" and the phrase "sports talk" normally have no business being mentioned in the same sentence. Well, that is unless you're speaking of my former show the "Sunday Block Party". Seriously speaking, "cool" is back in sports talk and credit David Nuno of 1560 The Game with the return of "cool" to the sports talk airwaves.

After the duo of the Houston Chronicle's Ken Hoffman and  David Nuno was disbanded and replaced by Travis Rodgers middays on KGOW, Nuno was moved to nights. KGOW had been promising to provide some quality night-time programming since its inception and has finally delivered by moving Nuno to nights 7pm-11pm Sundays through Thursdays.

Personally, I applaud 1560 The Game's management for the move, but I've been somewhat disappointed with the lack of promoting done by the station to increase awareness of Nuno's move to the evening. I believe Nuno's show format is a good format for sports talk at night. I'll add to that statement that it's also a long overdue approach for a sports talk format. If you like energy and trendy hip hop culture music, then "Nuno at Night" is the place to be.

NUNO'S GAME FACE!

Nuno's strength as a host is in his classic radio delivery and his work ethic. In addition to those qualities, Nuno's flexibility allows him to bounce between serious topics and comedic bits with seamless transition.

Listeners will be treated to really solid guests from the local, regional, and national sports figures of interest.

David's interview skills likely were enhanced and somewhat cultivated while working with his former midday co-host, Ken Hoffman. Hoffman is one of the best interviewers in the market, if not the best, and I believe some of that had to have rubbed off on a very coachable David Nuno.

DO YOU REMEMBER?

If you remember listening to sports talk at night on Sports Radio 610 back in the days of Adam Wexler and Danny Vera, it was like listening to-two old surly senior citizens energy-wise. I remember the name my guys would refer to Wexler and Vera as the "1.5ers". The name was given because Wexler was considered as a "stat junkie" and Vera was clearly affected by working with Wexler, and began mirroring Wexler's surly style of radio. The problem with that was, Vera was horrible on an already bad show, so we labeled Vera as a ".5er" because he wasn't original in his game, hence, the "1.5ers".

THAT WAS THEN, BUT WE'RE LIVING IN THE NOW!

No worries these days on nighttime radio with Nuno in the mix! There's always great energy from Nuno's production and with most of his broadcast being "live", broadcast from KGOW sponsors, it's an instant atmospheric upgrade over what we've come to expect from nighttime sports talk productions in Houston.

Sports Talk 790 is completely dropping the ball in regards to having quality local programming weeknights. Sports Radio 610 has local programming weeknights, but with the way-beyond aging, rude, and obnoxious Barry Warner as a part of their broadcast duo, it's easy to flip the dial to the far east side of the dial and enjoy a double-shot nightcap of "Nuno @ Night"!
