1560 DUMPS TIM BRANDO! IT’S ABOUT FREAKIN’ TIME!

Over the last half-year or so, HMW has negatively criticized the “Tim Brando Show” (10 AM – 1 PM, weekdays on KGOW 1560) several times.

For instance, here are some excerpts from May 18, “BLOWHARD BRANDO IS NO MARLON!” http://sheltonmedia.blogspot.com/2010/05/blowhard-brando-is-no-marlon-mike-in-da.html:

“Let’s face it. Brando has a pathetic talk show that should only be heard in the Southeast U.S. in states like Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. It is for people like “SEC Guy” and other redneck Forrest Gump fans. I don't care if a guy is a “homer” or not, but for those of you who like your talk show hosts being objective, Timmy B is definitely not your cup of tea. He's a big LSU honker and his arrogance and self-importance seriously challenges that of someone like Jim Rome.” END

“It's one thing to have an opinion, everyone usually has one, but this guy is so arrogant, it's pathetic. If you’ve ever listened to him interview anyone, check out the obligatory opening bullcrap introduction, which might go something like this:

The next guest on 'The Tim Brando Show' is a charismatic gentleman I've known for almost 30 years, since my TV days back at WBJ in Bobo, Alabama, where I used to be not only the program director, but also the morning show host, the weather guy, and sportscaster, and where I also met my beautiful wife, Terri, and also called basketball and football games for KKK College and got to know basketball-maven, Jay Bilas, who became a great friend of mine while I called basketball games for the 4-letter network for 12 years and became one of the best play-by-play guys in the business before Condoleeza Rice called me to Washington, DC, to serve as her advisor on Iraqi affairs, after which I joined Sporting News Radio where I have arguably the #1 national sports talk show .....blah blah blah blah, etc.” END

“Brando is so full of himself, it is pitiful. An old Army buddy of mine told me that there once was a radio show in the South called, 'Southern Sports Tonight'. When Timmy B became the host that wound up the show, no one could get in any words edgewise because he took over and wanted the listeners to know just how knowledgeable he was. Brando can easily fill his three-hour radio morning show talking to himself about himself. Tim always offers his opinion on anything and speaks with authority, even if he knows that we know he doesn’t know what the heck he’s talking about.” END

“He is the proverbial ‘legend in his own mind’. He is a name-dropper and a self-promoter extraordinaire. Brando understands that not everyone likes him, and that some people are really, really going to dislike him. He knows that. He even said so on his dull show.” END

“Hopefully, 1560 will be able to make a move here, before it's too late.” END

IN THIS CASE, 1560 HAS FINALLY RESPONDED TO HMW, AS WE KNOW SPORTS TALK!!!

In order to improve its ratings and stature in the local market, KGOW recently announced its new weekday program schedule - please see the following for the new schedule: http://sheltonmedia.blogspot.com/2010/12/kgow-1560-announces-new-program.html.

One of the moves by 1560 was to dump the Brando three-hour block and replace it by local programming, which is the way to go during the mid-day.

And to show you how bad 1560 thinks Tim Brando is, Raheel Ramzanali is co-hosting (with John Harris) the show that will replace the first two hours of “Timmy B” from 10 AM – Noon weekdays. Sports talker Raheel replacing "Timmy B" is like Adolf Hitler calling Attila the Hun a cruel person.

Other moves made by 1560 were to break up the team of John Harris and Sean Pendergast (3-7 PM weekdays) and to discontinue the Nuno evening show (7-11 PM Sundays through Thursdays).

Pendergast and Harris are two of the more intelligent local sports personalities on the air here. They are not loudmouths or screamers or arrogant obnoxious “know-it-alls’. With their respective Brown and Notre Dame pedigrees and their new svelte bodies, these guys should be running corporations and not taking calls from guys named "Jim from Katy", "Will", and “Freaky Deaky”.

Did I say taking calls? My bad, as they say here in the hood. Not taking a fair number of calls was one of the criticisms made here about their show. There was not much sports dialogue between them and their listeners. That’s why they’re called “sports talk” shows and that’s one of the reasons why their drive-time afternoon show couldn’t compete well with SR610 and Sports Talk 790’s afternoon caller-driven shows.

As far as the “Nuno at Night in the Morning Drive-Time Show” or whatever it’s called is concerned, all I can say is that 1560 is automatically adding by subtracting.

But no matter how much 1560 tries to improve its programming, they will never be taken seriously as a sports talk station until they get broadcasting rights to either the Astros, Rockets, Texans, or a combination of those teams. Having LSU or Oklahoma football does not influence appreciable numbers of local sports fans to move up the dial.

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist or the editor of Forbes Magazine or Business Week to know that broadcasting sporting events are what makes a sports talk station #1 in the market. 1560 started with two strikes against it back in August 20, 2007, when it went on the air for the first time without a major sports team to broadcast. Right now, they're trying to avoid that third strike by continuing to foul off pitches until they get they get the right pitch to hit out of the park and score.

1560 is like the Texans in that they are an “expansion radio station” that "drafted" John Granato and Lance Zierlein in the expansion draft and then signed on some free agents like Pendergast, John, Nuno, and Ken Hoffman and then picked up some journeymen. Hopefully for 1560, by their ninth year, they won’t still be third or fourth in the local sports talk standings like the Texans are in the AFC South.

HMW will be checking out the revised 1560 programming when it starts after the New Year on January 3 and will most assuredly be putting in its two cents.
