A REMINDER FOR SUNDAY!

I need to remind you now so that you can be prepared for Sunday. I’m not going to remind you to stock up on beer, chips, soda, etc. to watch the Texan game or whatever game(s) you plan to watch on Sunday; you already know you have to do that.

What you probably do not know is that Sunday is “National Walk Like A Zombie Day”. So for you zombies out there, this reminder is for you.

It's possible that you may be a "zombie" and not even know it. We usually know a "zombie" as a dull, stupid, unattractive person. However, “zombie” is the look that those who crawl into their chair for Saturday or Sunday night dinners have after sitting in front of a TV set for seven to eight hours straight (including at least one pre-game show) without moving except to go to the kitchen for a snack and the bathroom several times to take a pee or a dump.

FLUB OF THE DAY!

On Thursday morning's show (9/23) on SR610, in the birthday segment, John Lopez mentioned that Mary Kay Place was 63. He then said she wrote over 40 episodes of "M.A.S.H." In actuality, she only wrote three episodes, which aired during the 1973-74 season as follows:

– "Hot Lips and Empty Arms" (1973) (see picture below)
– "Springtime" (1974)
– "Mad Dogs and Servicemen" (1974)

Once more these guys can say anything they want and no one cares and they get paid for it on top of that.

And memo to Josh Innes and everyone else who says that the word "fan" comes from the word "fanatic". Please check out the word derivation of  "fan" yourself because I'm sick and tired of repeating it here at least once a month. That's just another example of ignorance, lack of knowledge, and misinformation.

Further to my 9/22 comments to Barry Warner about this week's Texan-Cowboy game being a "trap game", my question is how come when his Thursday night guest (9/23), Randy Galloway (from Dallas 103.3 FM and also a sports columnist for the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram), called last week's Washington game a "trap", in effect agreeing with what I said. Barry kept his mouth shut and didn't disagree with him like he did with me. In the hood, we call that being two-faced.

ICHIRO/MARINER MAGIC NUMBER UPDATE

Ichiro had two hits yesterday to give him 200 for the season. That makes the 10th year in a row that he has done that. No one in the history of baseball has done that. Pete Rose also had 10 seasons with 200 hits, but they were not in succession.

Keeping a watch on the Mariners’ shot at losing 100 games this year, as of this morning (9/24), they have ten games left to play and they need six more losses to get to that level. If that happens, as was mentioned in a previous blog, Ichiro will be the first player to have 200 hits for a 100-game losing team two times. Currently, eight players have had 200-hit seasons for a 100-loss team, but no one has ever done it twice.

COLLEGE GAME DAY HAS REALLY GONE DOWNHILL!

I used to like to watch College Game Day every Saturday morning during the regular season. It used to be interesting because the “panel” analyzed a wide range of college games for that day and tried to put some perspective on teams and conference races.

Then they started with the goofy stuff, which took up time in the program and now there is just too much of it in every segment. And the schmucks in the background screaming and mugging for the cameras for the entire show really detract from the show.

Basically, College Game Day has become almost unwatchable. To completely destroy the show, all we need is the schmucks in the background blowing vuvuzelas throughout the show.

FROM THE MAILBAG!

Earlis left a comment re the 9/23 Peanut Gallery: "COMMENTS FROM THE PEANUT GALLERY - MIKE IN DA - SE...": (http://sheltonmedia.blogspot.com/2010/09/comments-from-peanut-gallery-mike-in-da_23.html):

"...Is it not fascinating that Barry Warner can trash talk and bad mouth players to beat the band yet he gets pissed when we the people disagree with him...I really like the guy but it bothers me when a cat can really dish it out but when the roles are reversed he can't deal with it. I expect Barry to talk smack but I expect him to grin and bear it when the shots are directed at him and not a Frank Okam or Dan Orlovsky." END.

Anonymous left a comment re Craig Shelton’s article of 9/22: "WHERE ARE THE FOOTBALL MINDS? - CRAIG SHELTON - SE...": (http://sheltonmedia.blogspot.com/2010/09/where-are-football-minds-craig-shelton.html):

"So hire football minds and ignore baseball and basketball. When Yao dunks a ball, I should wait for The General's analysis? I know for a fact that N.D. Kalu can deliver my baseball news to me. I agree that the media here is lacking when it comes to football but the answer is not simply to get more football minds. How about hiring people that are dedicated to sports. I like the article, but football is only a portion of this city's problem. When I want local sports, I frequent blogs like this, Z Report, Houston Texans. I have went away from sports talk because you have professionals that are happy because they know more than their audience. Nice article Craig." END.

TEMPLE IS BECOMING RESPECTABLE!

Temple used to be in the Big East Conference. In 2004, Temple was asked to leave because they were uncompetitive and because they drew crowds to their home games in the four-figure range more often than not. Last week, they beat a Big East team, UConn, at home in Philly in front of 18,702.

Temple is now 3-0 on the year and they head to State College to play Penn State this week where there will be 100,000 or so fans in the stadium. In case you are wondering, the last time Temple beat Penn State was in 1941.

Here are some things that happened in 1941: the Japanese attacked PearlCheerios hit the grocery stores; Joe DiMaggio hit safely in 56 straight games; Ted Williams hit .406 for the season; the Mount Rushmore carvings were completed; Joe Paterno entered the 10th grade at Brooklyn Prep HS; and I was born.

TODAY’S TRIVIA

 Q. What team is the lowest scoring Division 1A (FBS) college football team in the country after three games? (answer is below)

ANSWER TO TODAY'S TRIVIA

The lowest scoring team this year after three games is Colorado State. The Rams have scored a total of 19 points in those three games while giving up 106 points. So what does the Crier do this weekend?  He's taking the Rams as one of his "Millionaire" games.

MIKE LEACH BEHIND THE MIKE!

Mike Leach will man the mike for the Tulane/Houston game this Saturday (9/25) at 3:30 ET on CBS College Sports. So, call up your "fat little girlfriend," and enjoy three hours of Leach bringing it strong because if AD's around the country have their way, this might be one of the last chances you get to experience greatness.

Reports earlier this week had Leach leaving the broadcast booth to take his talents to New Mexico, but it turns out they were erroneous. In Leach’s broadcasting debut (NC State - Central Florida on 9/11), his drab, monotone voice makes it look like he will be showing up here each week for a flub or two as long as he continues announcing.

His extended silences when an ordinary color man would add insight need to be improved. Leach is a natural and definitely has the potential to be a big time player in the bad announcing category.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL ODDS AND ENDS:

1. Oregon has scored 189 points in 3 games (or 180 minutes of football). Last week, Oregon beat Portland State, 69-0 (no one scored in the 4th quarter). In Week 1, Oregon beat New Mexico, 72-0. I guess that means that Portland State should be a 3-point favorite over New Mexico at a neutral site. Oregon plays a much better defensive team at Arizona State this week.

2. Arizona State botched a PAT and wound up losing to Wisconsin on the road by a single point. Their reward? They get to go home and play high-scoring Oregon (please see above) this week.

3.  HMW's Craig Shelton attended Michigan vs. UMass in Ann Arbor last week. UMass was picked to finish fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association (Division 1-AA) at the start of the season. Michigan won the game - but only by 5 points (42-37). Any of the alumni who took Michigan last week had to lay 30.5; those alums may be happy with a win, but they are also a little lighter in the wallet this week.

4. UCLA won its first game last week over Houston - who will have to play without their star QB for the rest of the season. This week UCLA visits Austin. The last time UCLA traveled to Austin was in 1997 and UCLA stomped that Texas team, 66-3. Do you think that Mack Brown will talk to his team about that game?

5. Florida beat Tennessee last week but only averaged 3.1 yards per rush against a team that gave up a ton of yards and 48 points to Oregon the week before. QB, John Brantley, has averaged only 150 yards passing per game so far this year. And remember, two of Florida’s three games came against Miami (OH) and South Florida.

6. TCU scored a TD on its first five possessions in a 45-10 win over Baylor. TCU is a team known to win with its defense. If they have an offense that can put 45 points up, they can play with anyone.

7.  Notre Dame started this season with a win, but then lost two close games to Michigan and Michigan State. This week, Stanford (3-0) comes into South Bend and is favored by 4.5 points on the road. Last week, Stanford beat Wake Forest, 68-24. I remember when Stanford was an easy win on the Notre Dame schedule.

8. New Mexico is 0-3 and has given up 180 points in their three games. Meanwhile, New Mexico State is 0-2 and has yet to be within three TDs of an opponent this year. I wonder what will happens when these two teams meet on October 9th. Stay tuned!
