DON'T DO IT VINCE!

A week or so ago when all of the USC/Reggie Bush controversy began pointing toward the happenings on yesterday with Bush announcing his returning his 2005 Heisman Trophy to the Heisman Trust Committee, my thoughts on the matter were confirmed by Felicia Young, Vince Young's (V.Y.) mom. Ms. Young stated (paraphrasing) that "my son isn't interested in gaining stature on the back of someone else's misfortunes".

My thoughts exactly was my initial reaction to Ms. Young's comments on the matter and I trusted from Young's comments that her and her son V.Y., were on the same page?

I had the pleasure of meeting Felicia Young a couple months back on KCOH 1430AM during my weekly guest appearance on Sports Rap with Ralph "The Godfather" Cooper (Tues 5p-6p). Ms. Young was in studio promoting a charity golf event she was sponsoring out at Wildcat Golf Course.

Ms. Young makes an excellent point in my opinion regarding the potential of V.Y., being rewarded the 2005 Heisman Trophy pending a decision from the Heisman Trust Committee. On Tuesday, September 14, 2010, upon hearing the confirmation of Bush returning the trophy, Vince Young made it clear how much he wanted to win the Heisman in 2005 and how willing he would be to accept it in 2010.

BOTTOM FEEDING

If Vince Young is offered the 2005 Heisman Trophy by the Heisman Committee and he accepts, I believe he loses a bit of shine off of his glowing legend. It amounts to bottom feeding if V.Y. accepts the award as his mom said off another individual's misfortune.

When Young was duked out of winning the award in '05, he solidified his already iconic Texas football status on a national level. I believe the way V.Y. destroyed the quote "greatest college football team ever" in the national championship game in the Rose Bowl, Vince made it painfully clear to Pete Carroll and USC who the best player in the country was and is a better pro than Reggie Bush in his 5th NFL season.

Don't do it to your legacy V.Y. We don't need the NCAA's version of "moral instant replay" policing what common sense observers are all too aware of the fact that the entire collegiate sports landscape is salty.

THE HUMAN ELEMENT

Major League Baseball has argued for years now that their primary issue with instant replay is it dilutes the history of the game by removing the human element. In the USC-Reggie Bush case the "human element" is what has us talking about this story over the past few weeks. It's definitely a sad case what Reggie Bush and USC have come to regarding Bush's relationship with the university over this controversy. Vince Young, hopefully will not perpetuate the circumstance by accepting the Heisman trophy if offered to him.

Vince Young may be the most polarizing figure in Texas football lore and I'd hate to lose one drop of respect for his legend. Vince, I hope that you will keep the haters in hate mode and keep improving your overall output as the face of an NFL franchise. Accepting Reggie Bush's trophy will only provide ammo for Young's detractors.

If Vince Young does decide to accept the 2005 Heisman Trophy if offered to him, personally, I'll be disappointed, but I will remain a fan. If Young accepts the Heisman Trophy it will be more of an indicator that Vince Young felt in his heart of hearts that he deserved to be the NCAA Football 2005 Heisman Trophy winner.
