THE HOUSTON MEDIA WATCH MONDAY REVIEW (SPORTS RADIO 610)

TIGER WOODS SPEAKS & CBS SAYS "NO THANKS!".

CBS turned down an opportunity for a five-minute interview with embattled golf superstar Tiger Woods on Sunday. I have to say that CBS may have gotten it right on this decision due to the fact that TIGER ISN'T GOING TO SAY ANYTHING! Tiger gave his first unscripted interview since the Thanksgiving evening event that spun us into "World Woods".

CALLERS FIRE BACK-LOPEZ BARKS & BITES:

This morning on the KILT Sports Radio 610 Morning Show, back-to-back callers called in to complain of 610's (and others) talking too much Tiger Woods. Normally I would agree with the callers' assessment, but 610 was on point this time: Tiger Woods is topical content this morning and time relevant.

Great back and forth between John Lopez and a caller who told Lopez that, "you're saying one thing, but deep down inside you feel differently", referring to Lopez's comments saying he wasn't knocking Tiger's interview (which he wasn't at the time). LOL. Well, Lopez took exception to the caller's comments saying, "oh now your telling me what's deep down inside my mind"? Hmmmmm lol! Interesting reaction by Lopez who commonly tells callers what they're thinking and what they want to hear. I refer to the numerous times callers have complained that they're not interested in the Tiger story only to have John "Mr. Jesus" Lopez tell them "of course you want to talk about Tiger. We all do". Ahhhhhh...no we don't, Mr. Jesus Lopez. Who the hell are you Mr. Jesus Lopez, "Big Ben" Roethlisberger over here? "NO MEANS NO" Mr. Jesus! WE DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT TIGER!!

PENDERS, YOUNG, WISE:

John Lopez reported this morning that former Phi Slama Jama great, Michael Young, and father of Texas State 4A High School Champion Jack Yates Lions star, Joseph Young, is requesting and will receive a interview for the vacant UH Cougars Men's Basketball Head Coach position. Tom Penders, is now one of only eight college coaches in NCAA history, to take four different schools to the NCAA tournament. Six years into Tom Penders' tenure at UH, he experiences the pinnacle of his time as UH's head coach and the rock bottom of resigning (aka getting fired) the next week.

Penders gets the Coogs back to the dance for the first time since 1992, and then is asked to resign after the Coog's first-round exit from the dance, after losing to Maryland on Friday.

I've been barking over the past couple months that Greg Wise should be the next coach to lead the Coog's men's basketball program. Michael Young (UH assistant coach) is hoping to bring Greg Wise in as an assistant coach if he himself is able to get the nod to lead the Coogs, according to Lopez's report.

CLOSE, BUT NOT CLOSE ENOUGH:

If UH were to hire Michael Young as head coach it would not by any means be the worst thing in the world for the program, but it wouldn't be the best elixir for the UH program either. Greg Wise has the momentum in the Houston and Texas basketball community and I believe would be the perfect fit for the Coogs.

I spoke with Wise at length last Wednesday, after getting off the air with Ralph Cooper on KCOH 1430. Coach Wise had been listening to Ralph and I comment on the disrespectful treatment the Yates team has received from Houston's local sports talk radio stations. Hearing that, Wise drove to the station to speak to Ralph and myself in person. When I walked to the parking lot to my truck, coach Wise was there waiting for me and he shared information with me regarding treatment of his team.

Wise made it clear that Tom Penders lied on radio when he said UH had recruited any of his players at Yates. Wise remarked that UH didn't even bother recruiting Joseph Young, even after being cautioned by Michael Young to avoid assuming that Joseph would commit to UH, just because his dad was on the UH staff (Joseph Young signed with Providence). Wise went on to say that "NO" UH coaches other than Michael Young had attended Yates games or practices or attempted to contact him regarding his players.

I like Tom Penders generally speaking, I think he's a great college basketball coaching personality. The problem is that UH needs a more energetic and enthusiast brand or approach to the UH program. I believe Wise would fit that profile and give the UH program an immediate boost!
