610 AM AFTER DARK w/ Davies & Kalu
I learned about this show almost a month ago and it peaked my interest. Initially, I thought it was a rip off of the Sunday Night Block Party however I was wrong as the SBP was driven by sports. After Dark is more based on guy talk, social elements and very little sports. The idea is solid but I'm wondering how soon will Gavin get nervous and pull it.
Why LM is not "pissing a fit" with little sports talk? These guys come right out the box and let you know the premise of the show is not based upon sports but "male to male" talk. This is the perfect type of show to listen to if you are on your way to the club and you need a few chuckles or if you are coming home from a house party to stay awake.
I can't front, I was ready to barbecue this show after I learned it was prerecorded a couple of weeks ago. The second week of the show's existence, I listened and quickly noticed no callers nor texts but I wasn't suspecting anything because this is late night and who would be listening to a sports talk station at midnight besides LM? Well a subject aroused that peaked my interest which forced me to call when a person answered the line and told me the guys were not in studio. At that point I decided not to waist my ear memory on a falsehood however I gave the guys a shot again.
FRIDAY'S SHOW
I begin listening about thirty minutes into the show and the guys came right out the box talking ND on the Hot Seat, Nigerian Day Care woman, and NWA vs MC Hammer. In addition to those topics, i think the Race Fuid has potential to take off if produced right.
The guys basically asked ND questions he was supposed to answer being he was the professional player. They asked when was the last time ND got drunk in which he answered two weeks ago at a bachelor party in Miami with a little Strip Club Chatter. I mean really guys? ND Kalu is a married man with kids and I think the prying questions of former athletes are overdue. Kalu goes out of his way to be normal with his Hip Hop and "hood" references and the "seasoned" personalities continue to put him back in a NFL role. It's clear this guy wants to live a normal life as a normal guy and it's only a matter of time before he let it be known. Of course the powers that be at CBS is going to capitalize on an NFL player being a part of their line-up but come on, when you ride at least use a saddle. Rilo said during the show he been to Puerto Rico and he's asking Kalu to paint a picture of Miami because he never been. Dude WTF, Kalu should be asking you to paint a picture of Puerto Rico (baby Miami). All in all, I think most of the former professionals love to be stroked to a certain degree but then you have the ones who want to interact as a "working class" citizen.
DAYCARE
Brad didn't want to bring the show down with the daycare child murder but he let loose on the provider who relinquished her duties of kids to go shopping. Brad said she should be sentenced to the death penalty. He proceeded to ask Kalu "what would you do to her" as ND said "she should be prosecuted to the fullest extinct of the law" but fell short of asking for the death penalty. You can pick up on one's politics by their stance on social issues and I got the vibe, ND is not a believer of the death penalty or maybe I'm wrong and he don't feel the death penalty is warranted in this situation. Who knows, it may be the Nigerian connection, just kidding but clearly it was a sensitive topic that you had to thread with a fine line. Honestly, I would have been cool with the young lady serving time in jail before she fled, but the mere fact she fled is reason for her to get that HOT needle. There was chatter about the authorities allowing her to flea etc....GET REAL!!!
Lets play this out, approximately three weeks ago, a video of Houston Police Department stomping a young black male. This video is indefensible and you think Houston Fire/Police Department & Harris County DA's Office is going to add fuel to the fire? All I am saying this lady will be caught but this would have been a public relations nightmare to the nth degree if they would have arrested her and she was innocent. If you take the emotions out of it, this was a "damn if you do and damn if you don't".
HIP HOP
Of all the things to can complain about, this is my biggest. N.D. Kalu and Rilo's Hip Hop cards needs to be revoked and shoved in the trash. I am not even sure what the topic was but when I heard Rilo mention, MC Hammer was the first true form of Gangsta Rap it caught my attention. The discussion continued with the guys debating who came first, NWA or MC HAMMER? The guys continued to another topic when they conceded NWA and MC Hammer was apart of the same era. No No No, I can't let this slide, first off Hammer and NWA only have California in common, they shouldn't even be in the same sentence.
All I know about Rilo is, he's an eccentric type of guy with a Chicago background. I am not sure of Rollo's age therefore I will give him a pass on that. ND Kalu is my age range (30-40) therefore I can't go easy on him. Here we are with young black African American guys on terrestrial radio who don't know who was first NWA or MC Hammer. I am really disappointed in Kalu because he can reach as far back as Trinity Garden Cartel, Black Monks, and Street Military but he could not come off the top with NWA v Hammer. Maybe these guys were late bloomers and didn't follow Hip Hop trends but hello NWA hairstyle is curls, MC Hammer hairstyle is parts.
Here it is, for two brothas to get on air and not know who came first: Hammer or NWA is laughable. In my article, I purposely avoid telling them but I will give them some clues. Dr Dre was a former member of the World Wide Wrecking Crew ya know "BEFORE YOU TURN OFF THE LIGHTS". The first major name out of the Bay Area was TOO SHORT, Hammer was from the Bay Area hence the name Hammer ie Hank Aaron (Oakland A's) and NWA was before Too Short. Again, Curls vs Parts.
Bottom line, asking who came first NWA or MC Hammer is similar to asking if DJ Screw hit the scene before Scarface. The time differential is so great it's not even an argument worthy of discussion. I really see I have to school my dudes on with HIP HOP, what will next week's show have, what came first The Harlem Shuffle or the Cha Cha Slide. I love Hip Hop too much to allow a discussion like that pass.
WRAP IT UP
Outside of my rant on the Hip Hop chatter, I liked the show. I wish they would treat Kalu has a normal guy and let him grow as a radio professional. What I don't like? I really hate the promotion side of the show and I am talking about Sports Radio 610 going out of their way not to promote the show (during the day) however during the "After Hour" show I hear the major shows being promoted. The only way you would learn there is local programming on 610 at that time slot is if you read HMW but I am not hear to toot our our horn but BEEP BEEP. The After Hour Show is almost like a joke when being discussed throughout the day because their weak ass research is telling them what they think we want to hear.
Here's a thought, CBS big wigs, in your budget how about allocating monies to real research to update your "Vision Statement" by hiring a Marketing Consulting firm to come and conduct a market or regional analysis of the listeners. I truly believe "radio" is not aligned with the general public and they are playing catch up in this "social media era". This is not a 610AM situation, this is all radio that relies so heavily on that 25-54 male demographic. With all of that being said, KILT 610 AM is 3 steps above the competition in their programming because the other shows are relying on the same antiquated research I'm accusing Sports Radio 610.
