ANNUAL ASTRO MEDIA GAME SEES "PRINT" MEDIA BLOW OUT "ELECTRONIC" MEDIA!

Last Friday morning (10/22) at Minute Maid Park, the Astros Annual Media Softball Game was played between some of the representatives of the print and electronic media that follow the Astros.

Friday morning’s game saw offense by one team that hasn’t been seen at the ballpark in quite a while. The print media won in a rout by a score of 18-0. Charlie Pallilo (Sports Talk 790) and Robert Henslee (SportsRadio610) must have sensed a blowout because although they are “electronic” media, they jumped ship and helped fill up the “print” media roster.

You don’t see too many shutouts in softball nowadays, but if a team was going to get shut out in softball, I would put my money on the “electronic” media. The Houston Chronicle's Zach Levine did his best impersonation of Tim Lincecum for the win. However to be fair, since the game was played in the morning, many of the electronic media were busy working and were unavailable to play in this “comedy of errors”.

DALLAS/FORT WORTH AREA TO SEE OWNER HOST CHAMPIONSHIP!

Now that the Dallas Cowboys are 1-5 and will play for a while without their starting QB, it is fair to say that Jerry Jones’ dream of hosting the Super Bowl in February 2011 with his team as the NFC combatant is over. However, it would be nice if Nolan Ryan invites Jerry Jones to come to Rangers Ballpark in Arlington and to sit with him in the owners’ box just so Jerry Jones can watch an owner host a “World Championship Event” in his own home stadium in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.

LET’S GO RANGERS!

Speaking of the Texas Rangers, as I mentioned here several months ago, I became a bandwagon fan of them in early July when I realized the Astro games were unwatchable. I don’t know what I liked best about the Rangers this season:

- relatively small payroll
- they were "bankrupt" when the season began
- the Josh Hamilton comeback story
- they didn’t fire manager Ron Washington, when just about every other team in baseball would have
- my favorite Ranger, Elvis Andrus
- they never won a pennant before
- I won a few Coke Classics wagering on them
- all of the above

CONFLICT OF INTEREST?

Once again, speaking of the Rangers, the Rangers/Yankees series in the ALCS provided an interesting situation for MLB.

Sports commissioners often get themselves mounted on the proverbial "high horse" when they feel the need to talk about how critical the “integrity” of the game is. In baseball, you often hear about that with regard to Pete Rose and to performance enhancing drugs.

With that in mind, was the “integrity of the game” tainted in the Yankees/Rangers series, as Alex Rodriguez who was playing for the Yankees was also being paid by the Rangers, in addition to being paid by the Yankees. The Rangers still owe A-Rod about $25M.

Is there a possible “conflict of interest” here?
WORLD SERIES ON ESPN RADIO!

Just in case you’re in the car and want to check out the World Series, all games will be broadcast over ESPN Radio locally on KFNC – 97.5 FM.

CRIER’S CORNER

NBA ACTION

Yesterday’s Record: 2-1
Cumulative Season Record: 2-1

Today’s Games (for reading purposes only):

MIAMI (-7.5) over PHILADELPHIA*
Doug Collins is back in Philly, but he tends to get overly involved and has burnout potential. He was fired back in the day by the Bulls after being miked up and using this strategy, “get the ball to Michael”. My 11 year-old daughter knows as much. Philly is ultra young in the backcourt with Jrue Holiday and number 2-picked rookie, Evan Turner. The Heat will turn it up tonight after last night’s disappointing start of the season. MIAMI, 113-98

NEW ORLEANS*(-3) over MILWAUKEE
Bucks
will again play hard and will fight for playoff position. Corey Maggette gives them power and an added scorer to go along with new addition, Drew Gooden. David West is a cornerstone player for ‘Orleans and with the addition of Trevor Ariza, they have another high-flying defensive player. Chris Paul should have a super season as he could be on the move next year. NEW ORLEANS, 105-96

SAN ANTONO* (-7.5) over INDIANA
Spurs
generally improved as the year expands, but they have one of the best front offices in the league and it was evident when they signed Duncan heir apparent, Tiago Splitter, who played great for Brazil on the international scene this summer and is a big man that is agile, fights, and can score. Spurs took DeJuan Blair last year when he slipped in the draft because of his questionable knees, but he was awesome last year. Window closing for Spurs, so expect things to gel earlier and Manu Ginobili to thrive from the get go. Pacers have some pieces, but are missing a big one at forward unless Tyler Hansbrough can overcome his vertigo and then prove he belongs in this league. SAN ANTONIO, 106-91

L.A. CLIPPERS* (+3) over PORTLAND The wait is over to see Blake Griffin and from early reports, he has been worth the wait. Along with Chris Kaman, Clips have a solid force down low, a steady influence with the A game of Baron Davis. They need a rebound run from Eric Gordon. Portland had to outscore Suns by 20 in the last quarter to win last night. LOS ANGELES, 98-94

DON'T BLAME THE MEDIA FOR BRETT FAVRE'S PREDICAMENT!

Celebrities like movie stars, professional athletes, politicians, and other high-profiled people are in the public eye and as a result they're more susceptible to public scrutiny than relative nobodies like you or me.

Which is why if you or me did at our job what Brett Favre is accused of doing, we would probably be fired for sexual harassment if a complaint about the incident(s) was brought up, but the world wouldn't know about it. Because of the nature of his job, there's no reason to feel sorry for Brett. He knew the risk when he left those voice messages. You might, however, put the blame on the website, Deadspin.com, for playing a role in a possible divorce situation between Favre and his wife, by posting the messages and alleged nasty video.

But how can you blame the media for the situation that now exists for Favre. It was Favre’s selfishness and lack of regard for his wife and teammates while he played for the Jets that caused this, not the media. For what it’s worth, any man who uses his workplace to find love outside his marriage is a schmuck. It will always come back to haunt him. That's what massage parlors and strip clubs are for. Many of the women at those places are very attractive, and probably just as hot as anything you'll see in a nearby cubicle, and you don't run the risk of having your penis plastered on the Internet.

What’s really sad is Favre was actually rejected by Jennifer Sterger. That doesn’t sound so good for this macho guy who holds the NFL record for completed passes.

FLUB OF THE DAY!

John Granato of 1560 KGOW was talking about the NFL QB all-time leaders in “comeback” wins on the John and Lance Morning Show on Monday (10/25), as he thought comeback wins were those games won in the last two minutes of a game. So according to John, that means if Peyton Manning threw a TD pass with 2:10 left in the game to win 21-20 after trailing 20-14, that would not be considered as a "comeback" win.

I suggest that John use “google” to find out just what determines what a “QB comeback win" consists of as well as what makes up a “GWD" (“Game-Winning Drive” for the acronym-challenged). Once again, one of our local sports talkers shows us his lack of knowledge on a topic.

And speaking of lack of knowledge on a topic, Charlie Pallilo on his Monday (10/25) afternoon show (Sports Talk 790, 3-7 PM daily)  was discussing the Minnesota Vikings. He said their next  game was in New England. The reason he gave that they were playing the Patriots was because the NFL schedules first place teams of the prior season to play each other the next season. Wrong Charlie!

The reason why Minny plays New England this year is because this is the year that the NFC Central teams are scheduled to play the AFC East teams. The first place teams that Minny plays this year are from the NFC (Arizona and New Orleans) as two intraconference games based on the prior year's standings are on their schedule. These games match a first-place team against the first-place teams in the two same-conference divisions the team is not scheduled to play this season. The second-place, third-place, and fourth-place teams in a conference are matched in the same way each year. That's why the Texans (2nd place last year in AFC South) play the NY Jets and Baltimore Ravens this season.

And of course SR610 continues to screw up birthdays by not checking if the person is dead or alive. On Monday morning (10/25) John Lopez mentioned Minnie Pearl’s birthday. She died in 1996. On Tuesday morning, he mentioned Sid Gillman’s birthday. He died in 2006. If you’re going to do an easy segment, such as reading off birthdays from a website, please ensure that the person is not dead.

On Tuesday night’s ESPN College Football Game between Boise State (BSU) and Louisiana Tech, announcer Beth Mowins made another one of the plethora of ESPN flubs this season. She said BSU’s last home loss was in 1993 to Northern Arizona. Wrong! Their last home loss was in 2005 to Boston College on the blue turf in the MPC Computers Bowl. Before that, they lost to Washington State in 2001. She also gave some other wrong stats about BSU’s excellent record at home. ESPN doesn’t seem to hire good research help anymore. They need more Howie Schwabs. You should hear all the flubs they make on Saturdays that go unnoticed.

COOL ATHLETE NAME!

SISSIFYING THE NFL?

All last week on local sports talk, there was a lot of whining among the “real football fans” about how the new NFL's enforcement of the rules on dangerous hits would ruin the game. Lots of those people declared that they would stop watching football if it was “sissified” by the NFL.

For all those whiners out there, since there were no “head shots” last weekend, were the games “ruined” for you such that you are never going to watch again? If so, we never need to hear from you calling in again because you aren’t going to watch ever again.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL ANNOUNCER QUOTES OF WEEK #8:

1. "It's certainly probably going to be reviewed" - Chris Spielman

2. "There's the second 'Boom Goes The Touchdown." - Rece Davis

3. "Grass hasn’t had a completion in the history of the game" - Chris Spielman

4. "3rd and short is a lot easier to convert than 3rd and long."- Bob Griese

5. "So he Persa-vered is what you're saying?" - Dave Pasch calling the Northwestern game

6. "I guess it's safe to say Michigan State is being Persa-cuted." - Tim Brando

7. "The key word? 'wide open.'" - Gary Danielson. That's two words.

8. "If that guy threw a better pass it would have been completed." - Matt Millen

9. "Brent, you & I have called a LOT of Missouri/Oklahoma match-ups, dating back to '07." - Kirk Herbstreit – these teams meet once every two years unless they meet in the Big 12 Championship Game.

10. "It's tough to win...when you don't score much." - Todd Blackledge

11. "Let's put some balls deep" - Gary Danielson during the LSU v. Auburn game

12. "Their offense looked like a dance group: 1, 2, 3, kick!" - Verne Lundquist

13. "Johnson-Koulianos wasn't the intended receiver, but he was the intended picker." - Matt Millen

14. "That's the Great Wall of China in those orange jerseys." - Dave Lapham

ODDS AND ENDS:

1. In Columbia, SC, there is a private liberal arts women’s college with a coed evening and graduate school that has approximately 1500 students named Columbia College. It is a member of the NAIA. Their nickname is the Fighting Koalas. Austin College in Sherman, TX, also of the NAIA, is a member of the American Southwest Conference. Their team name is the Kangaroos. It would be cool if the women’s soccer teams of these two schools played a game against each other in Perth, Australia.

2. Last Monday night (10/18) during its Monday Night Football telecast of Tennessee at Jacksonville, ESPN had play-by-play announcer, Mike Tirico, promote the upcoming Thursday night College Football telecast of UCLA at Oregon. Tirico told the viewing audience that it should be a good one. Oregon was favored by three touchdowns at the time, which eventually went up to 26 points on game day. How can ESPN look itself in the mirror after they ask somebody to lie to the American public!? It was definitely a good one, if you liked Oregon! Final score: Oregon, 60 - UCLA, 13.

3. With the Yankees and the Phillies out of the World Series, TV ratings are likely to be down this year due to the size of the home markets. I'm surprised that the people who instinctively bash Bud Selig for everything from diarrhea to cancer to global warming have not blasted his incompetence in rigging the games to assure that at least one big market team made it to the prom this year. NBA Commissioner David Stern does that all the time.

4. If you were confused at the end of innings during National League Championship Series telecasts on FOX last week, thinking that you heard the network's football theme music rather than its baseball jingle, you were correct. The network quietly swapped out its baseball theme, which includes a quick reference to its football theme, for the tune that has accompanied its NFL coverage since the sports division opened for business in 1994. The music the network had used for baseball postseason coverage the last 10 years had been slower and FOX wanted to perk things up. Don’t be surprised to hear the FOX NFL theme across all the network's sports telecasts going forward, including NASCAR. In order to refresh your memory, check out the theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0H09MBynulM)
