CRIER'S CORNER - THE CRIER’S BCS ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT - THE CRIER AND THE SR CREW - OCTOBER 19, 2010

THE CRIER’S BCS ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT

Written by: The Crier and SR Crew

Going into Week #3, the Crier’s playoff elimination tournament is now down to fifteen teams from the original 28 teams with Oregon and Stanford currently in the lead to meet in the Crier’s version of the BCS Championship Game. For the thirteen teams that have already been eliminated during the first two weeks, according to tournament rules, they are out of the hunt no matter how well they perform the remainder of the season.

Week #2 saw five more teams get eliminated from the tournament, the purpose of which is to determine who the top two teams standing as of end of play on December 4 will be. Hopefully, the BCS people will have the same two teams as "The Crier" for their championship game when all is said and done.

Regardless of whether or not the Crier agrees with the final two teams that the BCS selects, unless you're partial to the teams actually selected by the BCS powers that be, you will agree that the Crier's final two teams will be the more deserving.

The five teams eliminated in Week #2 with the rankings they had at the time were: #6 Nebraska, #9 South Carolina, #10 Ohio State, #15 North Carolina State, and #17 Arkansas.

Below are the rankings as of today, as well as this week’s schedule of games for the suitors to the BCS throne. There are three head-on elimination games this week, which are written about below (FYI - Florida State is idle and Boise State plays on Tuesday night).

Obviously, some of these teams listed below are pretenders. The pretenders will be eliminated in the coming weeks in elimination games, as will some of the more legitimate claimants to the BCS throne.

Good luck to all the remaining entrants in the Crier’s BCS Elimination Tournament. May the best two teams come out on top:

Rank – Team – Record – This Week’s Game:

1 Oregon 6-0 vs. UCLA
2 Stanford 5-1 vs. Washington State
3 Oklahoma 6-0 at Missouri
4 TCU 7-0 vs. Air Force
5 Boise State 6-0 vs. Louisiana Tech
6 Missouri 6-0 vs. Oklahoma
7 Auburn 7-0 vs. LSU
8 LSU 7-0 at Auburn
9 Florida State 6-1 DNP
10 Michigan State 7-0 at Northwestern
11 Utah 6-0 vs. Colorado State
12 Iowa 5-1 vs. Wisconsin
13 Wisconsin 6-1 at Iowa
14 Oklahoma State 6-0 vs. Nebraska
15 West Virginia 5-1 vs. Syracuse

THIS WEEK'S HEAD-TO-HEAD ELIMINATION GAMES (FOR READING PURPOSES ONLY):

Included in the above games, are three head-to-head match-ups of teams remaining in the tournament. Write-ups for these games (Wisconsin at Iowa, Oklahoma at Missouri, LSU at Auburn) are below.

Last week, the Crier was 1-1 both SU and ATS in head-to-head games and is now 4-3 both SU and ATS on a cumulative basis (for reading purposes only).

SATURDAY'S GAMES:

WISCONSIN at IOWA*
Without winning the turnover battle, 4-0, Iowa would have been in trouble vs. Michigan last week. The Wolverines spread the Hawkeyes out and put up over 500 yards of offense. Wisky’s physical run game plays a bit better to Iowa’s defensive strength and the home team will feel a bit more…at home. The Badgers won’t give up much on the ground, so look for Iowa to put this one in QB Stanzi’s hands. He stuffed the Badgers last year and will do it again this year vs. a secondary that has trouble vs. balanced clubs. IOWA, 27-20.

OKLAHOMA at MISSOURI*
Missouri has the better pass defense and they are a bit more balanced offensively. Whichever team’s QB makes the most plays will take this battle. In a game that will come down to the wire, gotta like Sooner QB Jones and WR Broyles' ability to convert big 3rd downs throughout the course of the ball game. OKLAHOMA, 24-23.

LSU at AUBURN*
Auburn’s recent score fests will cause the fellas in the desert to drive the game total here upwards. Looking at the stats…we just don’t UNDERstand. LSU’s defense is very fast and will mitigate the damage caused by Auburn QB Newton. They rank in the top 10 in run defense and top 25 in pass defense. Not too shabby. Given that they played McNeese State last week, they also had two weeks to prep. The Auburn defense is average at best, but the LSU offense can make any defense look like the 1985 Chicago Bears. Les Miles’ offense will have trouble running the ball, meaning that their ugly, two-headed monster QB of Lee and Jefferson might actually have to complete some passes. AUBURN, 20-17.
