SPORTS RADIO 610 SMASHED THE DRAFT BY LM

SPORTS RADIO 610 SMASHED THE DRAFT

I am very critical towards 610 AM because I felt the station has changed.  Call them void of sports knowledge. Call them feminine. You can even call them fake.  What you will never call them though is vacant, missing, no show.  I wrote an article last week which was a parody of how 610 would spin the draft for the good or bad but what I failed to say in that article is; 610 was going to pour in all of their resources.

I will give credit where credit is due.  All of the radio stations covered the draft beginning Thursday as expected but what separates the men from the boys is the weekend coverage.  How easy is it to cover the first round?  Funny how things happen because the consensus of Houston in the first round was "scared, confused, wondering".  The real action didn't occur until the 2nd-4th round which gave more validity to J.J. Watts.  So while all of the other stations were at home in bed secretly listening to 610 Friday and Saturday and sobbing at the fact they were not in on the action.

Sports Radio 610 covered every single draft pick from Cam Newtown to Mr. Irrelevant.  In addition to, they had player profiles for almost 256 players.  As somewhat of a writer now myself, writing is not fun nor is it easy.  OK let me be honest, EDITING and effing SPELL CHECK is not easy.  That's a true lie.  What was best about the draft coverage, was the raw unfiltered emotion of the pick.  Sure after the personalities got to see the variety of picks they could form a clear opinion but just at the moment of a particular pick, professionals of the business were instantly fans of the game.

BEATING THE CHEST

What makes KILT cool in these situations?  KILT act like they have been there before.  There are some radio stations in town that will hit on a bit, remote, or interview and they will champion it for nearly a month.  I am not saying they should or should not but when 610 scores a hit they hit, run it for about a day and back to business.  Do you still hear 610 talking about the Paper Football Championship, if anything HMW talked about it more than them which was a day tops.  I don't particularly like the direction Gavin is taking the station with "fruity sports" but he is constantly proving me wrong.  It's almost similar to being in the "hood" where the phrase "keeping it real" is strong.  Some of the biggest proponents of "keeping it real" are sitting on the bucket underneath a tree playing dominoes while living in the back room of their moma's house.

Josh said it best and I am paraphrasing, if you are going to play in the big boy league, you best bring your A Game.  What I see now in the radio market is similar to the end of the Cold War.  The Cold War is weird because there was no war in the traditional sense but America in 80s had the foresight to pour in resources that Russia government was strained by trying to keep up.  First we are going to expand our military, next we are going to sell hope, and finally implement Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI).  Of course any analogy can be used ie "Big Time" Law Firms opposing smaller firms.

Weekends
Blah Blah Blah I have heard the rhetoric, weekends are not even a measurable, KILT has to go local because their national sucks,  As stated a million times, Local Radio over National any day.  Maybe just maybe Houston people prefer local radio.  Hell give HMW more programming to bitch about but you don't want do that because you are sold into this archaic research that is crazy.  Funny how you criticize Personal People Meters (PPM) but you adhere to the outdated research?  Keeping doing your thing 610 on the weekends, love it.

WRAP IT UP
I still believe 790 and 1560 are the most talented in the market (in terms of sports) but when the time comes to show up and show out, 610 AM hands down is the champ.  Although there was alot to cheer about this weekend, what I did not like is  Kyle Kennedy not doing the player profiles.  I said earlier they had a guy that did the player profiles but he came off as a person that was winging it whereas Kyle's Kennedy's profiles were more complete and thorough.  In addition to, I happen to know Kyle Kennedy is a College Football fanatic.  As a matter of fact Kyle just may like college more than pro ball.  These are things Gavin has to improve, use your assets to the best of their abilities.  Why go out and add an additional person to do something that was already working.  Did Kyle accidentally bumble last year, what's the deal?

KILT may have a slight problem on their hand in the future.  What is that problem you may ask?  Josh Innes.  Josh Innes is a cool person but you can gauge a person when you are complimenting them.  The question, is Josh a team player?  I have personally heard Josh go to bat for 610 and coworkers but he has a significant "ME COMPLEX".  Monday I called in to tell Josh and Rich, "good job on the draft coverage" Josh checked me and said "He have to give props where props is due, Rich and I were not a part of it".  Now that was cool but 610 is a team, all of the guys deserve props.  We know that Rich and Josh were not on the air but Josh and Rich is a part of the team.  You can't be a part of a team when you are thinking I, Me, them, they.  That's your team and you accept it.  That's almost like Josh having his success on Jim Rome's Show, sure it was Josh but the team of 610 received the props as well.  Sure, Josh will include his individual achievements in his Career Vitae' but don't ever forget you are a part of a team.

BRAVO ZULU TO THE WHOLE 610 TEAM
