THE WORLDWIDE LEADER IN SPORTS CONTINUES TO CROSS-PROMOTE, WHICH RESULTS IN OFTEN OVERLOOKING THE REAL LEAD STORY!

Last Sunday (2/27), Brooklyn Dodger legend, Duke Snider, passed away at age 84. HMW paid homage to the “Duke” that evening with a montage of pictures, as we often do when someone of his magnitude (Hall of Famer) in the sports world passes away.

Also last Sunday, the Crier had a winning play on the LA Lakers over the Oklahoma City Thunder in an afternoon game that was shown on ABC/ESPN.

As you may know, ESPN loves to self- and cross-promote itself to the nth degree. As the self-proclaimed “worldwide leader” in sports, ESPN’s ways and means of doing so are so absurd that they often become comical. And every once in a while, ESPN’s disregard for sports is so obvious that it pisses me off. On ESPN, that night, the far bigger story was that basketball game over the Duke’s death.

That night, during ESPN’s Knicks-Heat game, the “bottom line” crawl, over and over for the entire 2.5 hours, brought us “The Lead” story for that day. Over and over and over and over and over, we read that LA won by three as Kevin Durant missed a 3-point shot at the buzzer.

"The Lead” story was followed by NBA scores and details, NBA on ESPN promos, NASCAR on ESPN promos, tennis on ESPN promos, college basketball on ESPN promos, NBA/ESPN power ratings, and the other usual ESPN shit.

And every once in a while ESPN managed to squeeze in that Duke Snider - Hall of Famer, eight-time All-Star - had died. This should have been “The Lead”, but it was treated as filler news. However, if Duke Snider played or worked for ESPN as an analyst, it might have been the lead story.

THE PEANUT GALLERY'S "FEEL GOOD MOVIE OF THE YEAR - 2010"

Last week, the Academy Awards were presented on ABC. The Peanut Gallery does not have an equivalent to that, but it does have it's "Feel Good Movie of the Year" award and the winner for 2010 is "Machete", which was directed by Robert Rodriguez and stars Danny Trejo as Machete, with Steven Seagal, Michelle Rodriguez, Jeff Fahey, Cheech Marin, Lindsay Lohan, Don Johnson, Jessica Alba, and Robert De Niro. And remember that great line from the flick: "Machete don't text."

With that in mind, the Peanut Gallery announces its first nominee for the 2011 "Feel Good Movie" award , which is "Kill the Irishman" starring Ray Stevenson, Vincent D 'Onofrio, Val KilmerChristopher Walken, Paul Sorvino, and Tony Lo Bianca. Like "Machete", it is based on a true story.

FLUB OF THE DAY

Mike Meltser needs to brush up on his math. On his Friday morning show (3/4) on SR610, when talking about Thursday night’s come from behind win by the Orlando Magic over the Miami Heat, Mike said the Magic overcame a 24-point deficit, 71-49.

Tim Melton on Friday night’s (3/4) 10 PM Eyewitness News on KTRK (Channel 13) said that the 4A and 5A boys high school games of that night were played in Austin. They were actually played in the Houston area. Also, the scores that he gave for two of the four boys' games (LaMarque-Kingwood Park and Hightower-Madison) did not match the scores of those games shown on the graphics.

In Saturday’s (3/5) Houston Chronicle (the “Dial File” on page C5, which consists of NCAA Tourney trivia and facts, Jenny Dial, when giving the changes in the number of teams over the years in the tournament wrote that from 1953-1974 the field consisted of 24 teams. Actually, the field consisted of 24 teams in just five of those years.

Actually, between 1953-74, the number of teams varied between 22 and 25 teams depending on the year, as follows:
22 teams - 1953 and '66
23 teams - 1957, '59, '65, '67, and '68
24 teams - 1954, '55, '56, '58, and '61
25 teams - 1960, '62, '63, '64, and 1969-74

BYU SUSPENDS JIMMER FREDETTE AFTER INTERNET PHOTO SURFACES OF HIM WITH A PEPSI!

March 5, 2011 (from SP) - BYU lost another starting basketball player today and this time perhaps the greatest player in school history  when the university suspended shooting guard Jimmer Fredette for a violation of the school’s honor code.

Late last night photos surfaced on the Utah sports blog, LDS.net (LatterDaySports.net for the acronym-challenged) showing Fredette drinking a Pepsi. BYU’s honor code prohibits caffeine along with sex, alcohol, tea, and cigarettes. It also encourages BYU students to monitor the behavior of their peers.

Confronted by BYU officials this morning, Fredette admitted to drinking from a 2-liter Pepsi bottle. However, he denied rumors that he had slid into even harder substances, such as Pepsi Max.

Earlier this week BYU suspended Brandon Davies, the team’s leading rebounder, for the remainder of the season for having sex with his girlfriend. And while many see the university’s honor code as outdated, BYU is admirably enforcing it to the letter even while it ruins the basketball team’s chances of reaching the Final Four.

“I apologize for my actions,” said Fredette. “It’s just that with games and practice and working out and mid-terms and everything I got really tired. So I turned to caffeine to stay awake. But I’m not making excuses. It was wrong.”Fredette also said that he tried Pepsi because: “I wasn’t sure if I could go another day drinking only water and juice. My taste buds wanted to commit suicide.”

“Our athletes know about the honor code when they come here and know they must abide by it,” said BYU president Cecil O. Samuelson. “They know they must live like Brigham Young, the school’s namesake, who lived a chaste life without drugs, alcohol, caffeine, or more than 55 wives.”

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO ESPN’S “BOBBY KNIGHT GOES CRAZY” TAPES! COULD THEY HAVE BEEN ERASED, LOST, OR STOLEN?

With the NCAA Tournament less than ten days or so away, whatever happened to that "Bobby Knight Goes Crazy" highlight reel, the one the ESPN family of networks used to show all the time. Those highlights showed Knight at his antisocial best and were always good for some laughs
.

For years, ESPN had shown tape/film of Bobby Knight going berserk on the court, whether it was: throwing a chair across the court; choking a player; telling people to kiss his ass when they bury him upside down; being restrained by a police officer when being heckled by a student at a road game; telling Connie Chung in an interview that if rape is inevitable, relax and enjoy it, when comparing it to poor officiating; a whole bunch of other interviews and press conferences where Bobby seemed to say crazy stuff or go nuts; etc., etc. I’m sure you’ve seen at least some of them in which Knight seemed to be making a fool of himself.

All of a sudden when Bobby joined ESPN in 2008, these highlight reels seemed to disappear from the ESPN library because I haven’t seen them on Sports Center and other ESPN shows in recent times. They have to be somewhere. They could be in the lost and found, but things like that just don't disappear from ESPN’s library.

It’s funny how stuff that ESPN relied on for years suddenly disappears. Here today, gone tomorrow!

And speaking of Bobby, I remember when he coached at Indiana, one of his favorite topics for ranting was when he complained about the negative impact ESPN had on college basketball. He complained of 9:00/9:30 p.m. starts on and for ESPN that were harmful to the visiting teams because they returned players to their campuses too late for next-day classes.

While they still play those late night games on and for ESPN, I haven’t heard Bobby complain about that lately.

BYU ISN’T THE ONLY NCAA BASKETBALL PROGRAM WITH A STRICT BEHAVIOR CODE!

Contrary to popular belief, BYU (Brigham Young University for the acronym-challenged) is not the only school with strict rules for its hoopsters. Many other schools have rules, but we rarely hear much about them except for the generality that a player was suspended or dropped from the team for breaking team rules. However, we're never told exactly what the rules are as in the case of Brandon Davies.

Below are some sample rules of code of conduct for some of the top teams:

UNLV (UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA - LAS VEGAS for the acronym-challenged)

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA

ARIZONA STATE

UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE

UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME

DUKE BLUE DEVILS

UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS

UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY

Today’s Action (for reading purposes only):

NBA

LOS ANGELES LAKERS (+2.5) over SAN ANTONIO*
The best in the West will square off in Texas and the energy the Lakers showed in their first game after the All-Star break was promising. They played defense for the entire 24 seconds, something that was missing most of the year. Ron Artest has picked it up since the All-Star break and when he shoots well, the Lakers thrive. The size should carry the day for Los Angeles. LOS ANGELES, 100 – 94

NEW ORLEANS (-6) over CLEVELAND*
The days of Chris Paul in the Big Easy may be numbered, but don’t expect him to hang out the ‘gone fishing’ sign. He still will try to get his guys involved and fill the passing lanes to start the break. New Orleans’ pick up of Carl Landry will make them much tougher down low. Just two years ago, he averaged 18 per game. When Trevor Ariza is feeling it offensively, the Hornets thrive. NEW ORLEANS, 110 – 95

OKLAHOMA CITY* (-5.5) over PHOENIX
"Nate Robinson out 4-6 weeks!" the headlines blare. Since when is Nate Robinson an integral part of any team he's ever been on, except in college? They all tend to do better when he is out. OKC has a circle drawn around this, given that Phoenix has had their number recently. But it's a sixth straight road game for the Suns, who are guaranteed a winning trip. Get the stamp, mail it in? OKLAHOMA CITY, 110-98

COLLEGE HOOPS

TENNESSEE* (+1) over KENTUCKY
Can’t ask for much more of a classic setup for Vols, given Wildcat endgame woes on the road, though wish Bruce’s guards (and program!) were steadier, when advancing the ball up the floor. TENNESSEE, 75-71

PENN STATE (+5) over MINNESOTA*
It would be silly for Penn State to fire HC Ed DeChellis, who’s staged multiple striking Big Ten road upsets against legitimate foes this season. With the rumors flying that Paul Hewitt’s a dead man walking at Georgia Tech, it’s no great leap to envision Tubby Smith grabbing the Tech job, in a spot where’s he’s got a better competitive chance than he’s got where he is, now. Take advantage. PENN STATE, 67-64
